Thanks for this info Megan. Your stats seem to be what I've been discovering via the internet. I have the room and the resources and the desire to do something with my hobby/passion besides spend money on it. Certainly isn't bad money for a day. Is there much call for this kind of work? Would I be swamped or would my machine (if I get one) be collecting dust?

I send all of my bed-sized quilts out to be done by long arm quilters. Around here (Twin Cities, MN) -- there are lots of them.... but the good ones are always booked at least 6 months out. I usually go for a more specialized quilting design -- different stitching (like feathers or cable or leaves) in the borders -- often a little Stitch in the Ditch, etc... haven't yet done an "overall" quilting. I have paid approximately $175 - $250 for my quilts. From what the long arm people tell me -- putting the quilts on and off takes a bit of time -- and if you do something fancy in the borders that requires turning the quilt -- takes even longer. I really have no idea what their "per hour" take is... but they must be ok with it -- cuz they keep doing it! (And the more they do it -- the better they get at it!).

Gosh, if I could get him to a quilt show the sky would fall. If he ever did go he would be nicely surprised I'm sure. I've been with him eleven years and quilting longer and he's never been to a show or guild meeting. By the way, would the $16K be the cost of a high end machine or extremely nice quilt?

I'd be surprised if you find such a site -- I know of at least two attempts in the past couple of years to gather that kind of info, and they've been foiled because of low response.

I can tell you that in the last several longarm classes I've taken, the age range has been from 22 to 78 (literally). Length of time longarm quilting was from 3 months to 15 years. Quilts per month ranged from less than 1 to over 25.

Length of time to do a quilt is meaningless unless you know what was done on the quilt. A simple meander will not take nearly as long as making a show-quality quilt.
