'Morning Everyone, Thought I'd take a minute to reintroduce myself as I haven't posted much, and I've decided to use my real name now rather than "quiltygurl".

I'm Lisa, and I'm happy to count LN and Diana Curtis among friends that are on this ng. If I remember right, I believe that I've also met Charolett Hippen over in Ames.... pretty sure anyway.

I live in Central Iowa, and I've been quilting for 15 years now. I teach quilt making and occasionally write quilting patterns. I'm also an avid crazy quilter, and I'm branching out into doing more and more beaded work on fabric and in jewelry for myself. I got to teach at a Victorian Needlework Conference this summer, and it was by far, the best quilting experience I've ever had. I came away from it feeling so creative that the ideas for new projects just keep coming and coming! Now, if I only had the time to act on all those ideas...

My favorite chocolate is Hershey's Nuggets with toffee and almonds...what can I say? Simple things make me happy :-)

I have some of my work on my picturetrails page, but it's just a small fraction of what I've done as I don't have a digital camera to take pics of the big stuff.....Maybe for Christmas this year...

I'm taking a trip out to LN's next month and I can hardly wait! She's got great plans for us! We will spend a day in Boston, and I will get to do two things I've never done in my life...I will get to ride on a train and on a subway. Ordinary, everyday things for some of you, but for a girl from the Midwest, it will be an adventure!

Nice to see you again Lisa! Your memory is right. We talked via email briefly last fall when I first joined the newsgroup. As far as I know, we haven't met in person yet. I took the beginners class and the hand appliqué class this spring with Kelly, and am really becoming more and more hooked on quilting. I've been visiting Quilting Connection more and more so we're bound to run into each other one of these days (unless we already have and didn't realize it). FYI: I love the new store!! So much more room, and easier to move around!!

Have fun on the trip!! Charlotte

You'll have to tell me what you look like (either that or I'll have to pay attention to name tags - but you guys don't always wear them!) so that next time we meet I can say hi. I'd hate to see you there and not say hello!

Hi Charlotte! Okay, now I remember! Hmmm..I did meet someone from rctq in the store, but now I don't know who it was!

Yes, the new store is just wonderful! It's so nice not to be tripping over bolts of fabric on the floor any more, and the lighting is just wonderful!

If you're ever interested, I belong to a small local guild called Just Friends. It's a very loosely organized group-no yearly shows or anything like that. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month, and I'd be happy to share details of where we meet with you or anyone in the Ames/Nevada area. The next meeting is tomorrow evening.

Oh, if ya wanna see what I look like, just go to my picturetrails page. I have one picture of myself under the "Family" album. But I don't wear glasses anymore. Lol....sometimes people get me mixed up with Kelly because we both have dark hair.

Welcome back! The chocolate is in the fridge as it's so hot. And we're working on a chiffon quilt with no batting, as it's too hot for 'real' quilts!

Hullo Lisa Yes, much prettier than 'quiltygurl'. You seem to be branching out in interesting directions. I'm so thrilled to have found quilting (ten years ago) that I am still exploring that sphere. I am moving my own horizons, but still strictly textiles >g'Morning Everyone,

It would be interesting to find out who it was you talked to. I didn't know anyone else from the area was member of the group. Hopefully they will read this thread and respond.

I would love to belong to a group (would give me an excuse to get out of the house, spend time doing something I enjoy and give the DH and DS some "guy time"). Right now I just don't have the energy and things are kind of hectic here (I'm expecting our second son early Oct., have a possible job opportunity I'm working on and we maybe putting our house on the market soon). Hopefully things will slow down a bit this winter (even if they don't, by then I may need some stress reliever time LOL!!). I'll get the details from you when I'm ready to join in.

I checked out the pictures on your web site. I must say you do really beautiful work!!

Hey Di! lol......all ya have to do is get in your car (only after you feel well enough, young lady) and motor on down. I still think that it's only a 3-4 hr. drive. Not bad eh?

I dunno what took me so long to post. I think I'm just feeling happy about quiltmaking again, and I can't think of a better place to talk about it then rctq. :-)

Lisa who? :D

I'm trying to remember if you met any other rctqers. I think just Charlotte Henson. Neets didn't make it up that year. Hmmm. Actually, she didn't make it up this year either. Mim made it this year, but you didn't. Gotta start synching you guys better.

That's right. She's been either off of the ng or lurking. She hasn't posted in ages.

Oh boy, it sounds like you're getting the kind of weather we are used to having in the Midwest! But, being used to it doesn't mean that we like it any more than you do. Hope that you'll get some relief, and soon! It's been a fairly nice summer here, but we are headed for a big warm-up by the end of the week. Chiffon quilts?? What a cool idea! can you imagine this...two layers of chiffon, or maybe even a fine tulle, then trapping things...threads, yarns of all description, little bits of fabrics and such...between the layers, and then quilting it? Then you could edge each piece with a binding....Oh, I am definitely seeing this as a possible project. What fun it could be!

Hi Patti, Oh, never say never! :-)

Recently, I went to the Iowa State Fair, and there are so many interesting things ending up on quilts. I noticed that there were more and more quilts, yes even traditional ones, that are being beaded, and being both hand and machine embroidered. That's not to say it's everyone's cup of tea though.

I guess that I enjoy making crazy quilts or maybe I should call them "embellished quilts" because it gives me the chance to explore so many different mediums all on one piece of work. I can applique, embroider, paint and bead all on the same piece. It can have a very traditional look, or very contemporary depending on the materials that I choose. I still make traditional pieced quilts, and I think I aways will, but I do love to take a break from all that presise sewing and just cut loose once in awhile!

As for the camera...I seem recall seeing a comercial on tv for a disposable camera that works something like a digital camera. I think the pictures come back to you on a disk. I'm thinking that I can give one of those a try and see if I can't get a few more of my quilts up on my picturetrails album. It's worth a try anyway!

There was s shirt made like this in a Vogue pattern magazine a while back: it had feathers trapped between the layers... Odd, but beautiful.

You can do that with any camera, Lisa. Just check the box that says, "Please send disk" or "Make availble online" or something like that.

I was thinking the same thing. When I was a kid my mom had something she called a summer blanket? summer sheet? It was a flannel sort of fabric, cotton, heavier than a sheet but lighter than a blanket and just enough weight to keep the chill of summer morning off. Right now on our bed we have a cheap mass produced quilt * a gift* that is just right temps-wise. Its not to warm for summer. Diana

Those two adventursome events do not sound ordinary to me. Here in the Southwest we have no subways that I know of, and most of the trains are for freight only. When I was a girl in San Antonio, the school district chartered a train to go the 150 miles to Austin and back. While in Austin we went to the capitol and picnicked on the grounds before returning home in the evening. It was fairly pricey -- $1.50 per kid, if I remember aright. This was in the late 40s, so my memory is justifiably spotty. Then last year we took our two younger granddaughters on the Hill Country Flyer. It goes from Burnet to Liberty Hill, a grand distance of maybe 20 miles, and then back again. I don't recall any adults not accompanied by children. It seems to me that for the four of us it cost about $60. Makes me feel like a real gadabout, going for a train ride every 50 years!
