Ricky Tims Seminar (LONG)

Hello! Just last week I had the good fortune to attend a Ricky Tims Seminar in Richmond, Virginia. The event ran for several hours on Thursday evening, all day Friday, and all day Saturday ... about 15 hours of quilting demonstrations and lectures! Ricky gave most of the sessions, while Libby Lehman and Alex Anderson each gave two sessions. Each registered person received an outstanding syllabus. This is jam packed with charts, information, and pictures.

Plus, on Friday night Ricky gave a concert. He is a classically educated musician, and played the piano and some other instrument that looked like a wooden flute.

There was a good display of their works, and a few other works. A Richmond Bernina dealer had a 'store' where I bought on book and four fat quarters. Ricky had a 'store' selling gorgeous hand dyed fabric, cds, thread and notions. The owner of Superior Threads, Bob, attended the Seminar and gave two sessions about thread. I then received a certificate stating that I am now a PhD of Threadology! LOL

It was fun to have a mini vacation with quilter friends, to learn good stuff, and to view beautiful quilts. The Seminar had about 450 attendees. It was VERY well organized, with all events starting and finishing on time. The logistics were also very good.

The event here was nearly $200 for the Ricky Tims Seminar; hotel and meal costs were on our own. My guild had a group that registered together, saving each person $40. The cost was well worth it. I receive NO compensation for this message ... I am posting in case some of you are considering attending a Seminar.

All for now, PAT in Virginia

Not a bad deal for the organizers. Wow!

Glad you had fun, the seminars do look very interesting. It was nice to hear about it from someone who has actually been.

They are doing one in Omaha in August....my birthday. Still considering it, but I'll probably be chauffeuring DD back and forth to school. I doubt she will be driving by then. Her leg/ankle/foot is still very swollen and painful. But improving ever so slightly. She's having some shooting pains which I'm hoping is the nerve "waking up".

She's been elevating so much that I wonder if she'll just relearn to walk with one foot over her head!!! I'll certainly consider your suggestion. I might need a short vacation by mid-August....or better yet, maybe she'll be mended enough to not need help. Wow, that would be wonderful...but not likely.

Gosh, I think the sessions on thread alone, would be worth the price of admission. There's SO much out there to choose from now, and it can get rather confusing. I do love Ricky Tims line of decorative thread for the bobbin. I've used it a couple of times, and though you have to load up a couple bobbins if you're doing a larger piece, the effects are quite nice. I generally like Superior Threads as a whole. The seminar sounded like a lot of fun, especially since all you did was take notes! Information is always a good thing.

I did one day of a Ricky Tims seminar a few years ago. I loved it! We were leaving for a trip to the Oregon Coast the next day, so couldn't do the whole thing. Luckily the room where he taught the class I took had a well tuned piano in it. So, after he got us all sewing on the next step, he would sit down and play. Most restful wonderful class I've ever taken!

For some reason I didn't receive Pat's original post, but was able to read it in someone's reply. Thank you so much for posting your experience Pat. I am the coordinator for Ricky Tims Super Seminar in January of 2008. It's been a joy to work with his partner & his office staff. We are very excited that he is coming. He will be in Livermore, CA. We found out about it from another member in our Guild who flew to Florida to see him & came back raving about it. We've sold about 1/3 of the available tickets so far & I'm confident that we will sell out - the facility we will be in only holds 575 people & we're still 6 months away!

I write something up every month for our newsletter - do you mind if I cut & paste your comments? Or, if you would like to email me at my email addy with anything else you think might capture the interest of anyone who is hesitating, I'd sure appreciate it.

I am green with envy Pat! I love Ricky Timms. I was fortunate to have been on one of his workshops over here in Europe(Holland )and so enjoyed every minute! What I learnt from him has been very useful and I still use to this day!!

I noticed the other day at a quilt show that R. Tims and Alex Anderson both had threads for sale made by Superior...I'm assuming Libby Lehman does too???

if it looks like healing is going to take a while, you should look into getting hand controls for her car (or the car she would drive), I don't think they are cheap, but it would probably recoup the petrol cost of the extra driving (going places to drop off and pick up) or be worth it for your time if you end up having to hang out some place to wait for her.
