Sewing with a 5 yr. old..in Re: Sewing with a 4 yr old

My 5yr old DGD is learning to sew 2 1/2" squares together by hand. I explained to her that the 5 pioneer girls learned to sew at that age....I set up a sewing basket for her with needle and thread and a TINY thimble and some precut 2 1/2" squares she chose from my stash..She is making a blankie for Molly her AGD (American Girl Doll)...I have been working on her pechant for fabric for sometime ....she started with a cookie tin filled with I Spy charm squares , which we looked at over and over again...Now we can't go by Hancock fabric without stopping in...Last week she was upset we couldn't "stop and feel the fabrics"...another quilter in training and a fabriholic!.... Atta girl, Mauvice. Way to go! That's just wonderful. I really ought to go borrow a 5 yr old for myself. I suppose the mama would want her back - after a few days. Polly

I have a 6 year old little boy you could borrow. A couple of days would be great ~ long enough to get a break and to start to miss him. Unfortunately he's not the one interested in my sewing. That would be DS#2 who is currently 3. But perhaps a visit with 'Aunt Polly' would change his mind. Even if he isn't ever interested in quilting or sewing, he is eventually going to be taught how to mend by hand, and if he wishes he can be taught to do it on my machine too.

Hopefully DS#2 will stay interested so I have someone to teach. DSis (who doesn't do anything crafty or sewing related-not even her own mending) says my grandmother, my mom and I aren't allowed to teach DNiece how to quilt. My mom has told her 'just wait, she'll get into it, you'll see!' We were going to 'steal' her for a sewing weekend we had with my grandmother, a couple of aunts, a cousin and a couple of friends last weekend, but we were told she couldn't come. She is only 1 mo. old so we still have a bit of time to get her started. In the mean time DSis better get to saving and make an addition to the house for the stash DNiece is going to acquire with all of us helping her.
