Most folk have AC these days. I grew up in the OC and it nobody had AC in those days. The neighbors in SD said that in the 50's it just didn't get as hot there. I don't know if there really is a global warming or folks are just more spoiled these days. DS has moved less than 2 blocks from the beach. I've never lived that close to the beach but he has not griped yet. With all the equipment he has to wear to stay safe at work living in a nice climate a good thing. AC not much help working outside. You know CA is in a bad way and more folks than ever leaving. You all are going to have many of us 'different' folks in your own neighborhood. I wish I could hand pick some of the ones leaving. LOL

Our heat wave hit 94? today. It's too early for that, but we're sort of used to warmish weather. ;) It should cool down a bit this weekend, but it will soon go back to 90's, followed by 100's, followed by 110? -- or so. But it's a *dry* heat! ;) The only bad part of that for me is that my sewing room faces due west; the entire house (all not-quite-1500sq ft) faces either due east or due west. They told us it was north-south oriented when we were buying, and we were too confused by the twisty roads to know. LOL!

How frightening for your SIL! Jumping from a building....WOW! I hope she can recover from this as quickly as possible.

i've always posted under this name. i did another search up there in the blank box at the top of the page for 'wholeylady'. i thought my first post was 6/8/01 but i found another post from 2000.

If the front door of a house faces either north or south, then that's what they tell you the orientation is. When we moved here to Magnoliaville, I asked the builder what the orientation of this house was and he just looked at me and asked why I cared -- LOLOL -- It's south-west BTW! 35 years of living in Lizard Land is why I cared and they don't use shade screens here either! My sewing room faces south-west and it gets pretty warm in the afternoons but the bedroom is north-east for which I am eternally grateful! OH and when we wanted to put in a drip system for the "pine islands" and other plants, the local hardware store had to order in the parts because no one here used it -- and this was about 5 years into a massive drought! I tell people here that if you haven't lived in the desert south-west, you don't have a clue what conserving water truly means! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Seriously? One of my previous design lives was home design, so I can corroborate, orientation can be EVERYTHING, *especially* if/when you're putting out the bucks for a newly built jobbie. Passive solar, airflow, entrances, privacy, natural light, utility bills, where to put the sewing room... the list goes on. When custom-designing (as opposed to "little boxes on the hillside") orientation is/should be the very first consideration before pencil is ever put to vellum (Oops, there I go dating myself - I guess it's all done on 'puters nowadays...)

I live in one of the little boxes but on the flat. I understand the builder stands at the street, tosses all the parts and where it all lands is the house you get. (that is what dad the builder teases anyway) I have the wonderful morning sunny room for my sewing. Great in the winter, less so in the summer. I love the bright light any time of year though. I remember the architect teacher in drawing class in around '77 saying the work would never be done by machines. He is probably long gone now but he would have been surprised! Taria

Unfortunately, we didn't design the house ourselves. In fact, it was not only part of a development, it had already been sold to someone else who backed out of the sale just in time for us to grab it. The realtor thought the house faced a different direction, but nothing in it is north/south oriented. I love our little house, but summer in my sewing room is rather uncomfortable. :O

Thanks, everyone. Yes, thank god Nona got out of the building. Her bed is a crispy set of metal springs; the fire started under her bedroom (neighbor smoking in bed). . She's staying w/ us until she can get an apartment. I'm pushing Freecycle (ask for what you want/need) and garage sales, and reminding her that donated linens can be turned into quilts, curtains, covers for furniture that is "not to my taste". ;-) The band plays on:
