Speaking of Quilt Magazines

I'm in the process of letting all of my subscriptions expire. I get a slew of them and have for years. I have a large bookcase full of old issues of quilt magazines. And I'm always excited when they arrive in my mail box. I read thru them; they sit on the end table; and I file them away. It seems such a waste. I can't remember the last time I actually made a project that I found in a magazine.

I plan on browsing thru them at the stores when they come out. If there's something I can't live without, I'll buy one. Otherwise, no.

I am exactly the same way! I have tons of magazines with little flags marking the projects that I like but have never made...

Maybe it's time to use those patterns and dwindle down the stash so I have room to get more.

I do that with all the quilting and sewing magazines, but I'm thinking of getting a sub for Mark Lupinski's Quilter's Home mag: it's funny and outrageous and irreverent, and... It suits my warped personality! Take a look:

I don't keep many magazines. If there is a pattern that I want, I tear it out, put it in a plastic page, and place it in a 3 ring binder. I have a list on the front of the binder that lists all the patterns. I have a binder for computer/magazine patterns, and 2 binders with patterns I have purchased. Each vinyl covered binder has a list on front listing the patterns. I also have another binder with quilting tips, free BOM's from a few sites & RCTQ, and redwork patterns. Again, there is a list on the front of the binder telling me what is in that binder. I just wish my stash was that organized!

I do something similar. Except I collect them for a year first... keep 2 years on my shelf -- and when the 3rd year is over -- purge the oldest year doing what you do -- saving the specific patterns that appeal to me... the rest hits the bin. Sometimes someone will reference an article or something recent and I like being able to go check it out (cuz I usually can't remember it!). After 2 years -- it is truly HISTORY!

I'm quite new to quilting and even newer to the US quilting scene, so I find magazines very informative, I don't tend to read the ads, but some catch my eye, and I've learned a lot. I am not at all reliable at knowing now what patterns I might be interested in in future, particularly as I'm the type that rarely follows patterns, so I like to have a pile of magazines to look through, the state of the magazines I have bought is poor, so I guess they've been worth it!

It is "funny". I don't buy magazines for the projects, exactly. I buy them for the articles, the techniques, the advertisements and announcements. I enjoy looking at the projects, but don't often have the urge to really make one of them. Sometimes they are the inspiration for something else, but sometimes it is just to see what fabrics are used, what fabrics are new on the market and so on.

I subscribe to "The Quilter" and I really like it. I've only made one pattern from it in the four years of subscribing though. I love the inspiration. I've made a vow (fingers crossed) to make holiday projects this year. My guild also had a special rate of $15 for Fons & Porter, so I should be getting that soon.

I've been a magazine junkie for a long, long time. But Joan's note struck a chord in me and I think I'm joining her ranks. As the renewals come in, I'm going to let them lapse. I'm starting to feel I'm just acquiring quilting "stuff" rather than actually doing much quilting. Time for a new approach. Thanks Joan!
