bead magazines survey

I just got done filling out the survey someone posted here and was wondering how others feel about the bead magazines that are currently out there. I find most of them have too many beginner projects and not enough interest for an advanced beader like myself. I think Lapidary Journal has been really getting thin and doesn't have near what it used to have. I have been very disappointed in most to the bead magazines out there. Button and Bead has really started to get much better then it used to be and is growing with good projects but still find that most of the things are for beginners and not enough creative things for someone like myself. How do you feel about this. Roxan

I agree. I'm also annoyed by that fact that I have to flip through ever single page to find all the projects. The table of contents rarely has descriptive titles. I think they should have an index in them, with pics of the products, and skill level ranking; I'd rather be beading that browsing a magazine, LOL. WAJ kinda does this, but they have a lot less projects in each issue.

WAJ? What magazine is that? Thanks

Wire Artist Jeweler. It's pretty cool, but I do wish there were more projects in each one (but, then, that's always the case ;o)

I agree that Lapidary Journal, which used to be one of my faves, has gone down in quality. LJ also publishes a magazine called "Colored Stone". Is anyone familiar with that? Patti

I agree - too many beginner projects and not enough variety. Also, too many ads - I know the mags need the money, but they need to balance that out by including more articles. I would like more info on the history of beads, jewelry fashion, etc.

Yes - they used to have lampworking techniques and such as well. Now it's mostly advertising. I subscribed a year ago, but I don't think I will be renewing. Their new Step By Step Beads magazing is okay - but still beadweaving and project driven - there are so many mags just like that out, I was hoping their's would be more about Beadmaking than bead stringing and weaving.

Hear, hear! It really is getting a bit out of control with the ads. I realized when B&B first started up they wouldn't make it long with no ads, but they have gone really far to the other extreme if you ask me.

I just went through some of my past issues last night, and I TOTALLY see what you mean. Before, I had just written it off as something I didn't like; never gave it much thought. But, that's it, they look amateurish, and just thrown together.

I like BeadStyle, because it has "younger" type jewelry in it. I've just turned 23, and a lot of the projects in the other magazines don't speak to my *style*. BeadStyle has a lot that do :o)

Actually, I'm the same way. I graduated High School at age 16, and was out of college by 18 (community, anyway). ALL my friends were much older than me, and still are (well, my best friend is a couple months younger, but second best is 10+ years older...). I shacked up with DH at 18, had my first kid at 19, opened my own business at age 21, right before having my second kid. Now I own TWO businesses, and I am working on a third. I feel much more comfortable with people older than me, because people my age are...uh...disillusioned? My brother is 21, and he's just now figuring out that life ain't fair; it's interesting to watch it happen to someone else, when I've just gone through it not too many years ago ;o)

And THAT, Harry, is rambling! LOL ;o)
