Squash Blossom Quilt Done

Just wanted to let you all know I finished my quilt. Can you believe I used 2-600yds of thread of course there were so many pieces to this quilt that I probably wasted one spool with my string cutting. It is beautiful and I used two inner borders to make it a little larger which ended up 63" x 81". Since I do all my quilt tops for the needy, it is just too much wor k, so want to do easier ones in the future. It was a challenge and at time s felt over whelmed. My question to all of you, does anyone else get out o f your comfort zone to make harder quilts? Sandy$ in Idaho

Well done on finishing your difficult quilt Sandy.

I'm sure we do all try something a little harder than before, at some time. I would stick to something simple, if I wanted it in a hurry etc But, to try something not attempted before is a great idea. I would stick to fairly straightforward, though, until you have mastered the basic techniques. There is just as much skill and beauty in a simple quilt, beautifully made, than one with lots of fiddling around >g<

I usually keep the harder quilts for myself to show off on my bed. But then again, most of my quilts are not that hard! I enjoy making the type that might be see in the older western movies. Barbara in SC

Hello Pat, My next quilt will be easier as I plan on making it more simple but wi ll have to graph it out first to get the size I want. It is called Flower Garden. Sandy$ in Idaho

Just a thought, Sandy, on drawing out your quilt on graph paper (I mostly design all my quilts, so do a lot of drawing!). You say 'to get it to the size I want'. Be prepared to be a little bit flexible in the 'size you want'. You could make things very difficult for yourself, if you stick rigidly to a final size: scaling down and then scaling up again can, in some cases, lead to complex fractions! So, Unless your quilt *has to fit into a specific space, make life easier for yourself and build in a bit of leeway. I'm not saying you'll need it; but, as you might guess, I have gone down that route and cursed >g< The other thing which can affect final size, is even slightly inaccurate seam allowances.

Do you have a picture posted anywhere where we can see it? It sounds lovely.

This is sent from Mz Butterfly, she is having "issues" with her iPad:

Trying to reply to you once again.

To make things easier for you:

1: It is only ONE stitch at a time.

2: IF you make a 'wrong stitch' S T O P

remove the error and then go on....

sure beats having to take an entire seam or

block out at the end

3: If you get overwhelmed TAKE A BREAK,

go do something else, even if it's only for 5 min,

and then go back _OR_ go back the next day

4: If you're still lost come ask us--one of us

should be able to 'help' even if its

only a listening ear.

5: More than anything ENJOY the process :)

And yes, I've done a few that have stretched

the imagination...a few Hug quilts come to mind;

Madame Butterfly,

Campbell's soup theme

and the "Barn" theme.

Do any of you have pixs of the

aforementioned 3? I don't have a

FINISHED pix

of any of these.

Butterfly (ONLY way I can send these

are by having

short lines of type.

Hello Marie, No I do not have a picture but get most of my patterns out of quilting magazines. You might still get the magazine name and maybe look it up in th eir archives. The next one is from "The Quilters magazine" Special edition 2013 and is called Flower Garden which is a 6 x 6 inch block that I am in the process of using a graph to make larger as 6 inches is too small for me . I also want to make it simpler to make. Sandy$ in Idaho
