Traveling with Sewing Machine

My granddaughter is flying to my house and we are going to a retreat. I told her she could use one of my machines, but she wants to use hers. She wants to carry it on plane. I have never traveled with sewing machine so I am not much help.

Could someone that has flown with sewing machine tell me how that works?

Thanks

This doesn't rise to the level of being a suggestion - it's just a thought. As much as we hear about lost luggage with airlines, maybe your DGD would want to look into just taking it to her UPS store. They would have whatever it takes to pack and ship it for her. That might cost more than buying the SM its own plane ticket - I don't know; just something to consider. I'm more than a little envious that you get to do a retreat with a granddaughter. How very wonderful. Polly

Yes I am looking forward to this retreat. She is the only granddaughter that has shown any interest in quilting. And I haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with her. Thanks for your suggestion Polly

Well, it might be worth a phone call to look into. I only mentioned it because of two of my sisters. They both fly a lot. One never has any problems at all. The other one never seems to get where she's going when she's supposed to get there with what she was bringing. Polly

Martha Pullen class information suggests you always ship your machine rather than taking it as luggage if you fly. They also suggest you make sure the machine is covered under your homeowner's insurance and call your insurance agent to see if you need a special rider on your policy to cover it in transit. It will be too heavy to put in overhead stowage (Would you want to be sitting under that if the plane hits turbulence and things start to fall out of overhead luggage compartments?) and probably too large for carry on to fit under the seat. I've seen how baggage is handled; I'd have it insured, packed and shipped if it was my machine. Also remember that if she's bringing along her sewing equipment that cutters, scissors, other sharp pointy things and some aerosols (at security's discretion) won't make it through security if it's in carry on.
