Can't help with advice - I use shoes or magazines on the ones with big bodies and let the others be.
However, I have to tell this story from my time in Scotland. One of my flatmates was a very young French male hairdresser - fairly camp as well. In the autumn we had a lot of garden spiders come in the flat and he really did not like them. One time, we were watching TV and one ran across the fireplace. My flatmate jumped up onto the easychair and started shrieking "A SNIDER, A SNIDER" - getting the word wrong. I just about fell of the couch laughing before putting him out of his misery :-)
Please note, I am not putting anyone down for fear/dislike of spiders, it was just one of those times.
