Very OT: Help with spiders

I bought some little doodads at WalMart. They are supposed to send out some ultra sonic signal that drives away pests- spiders, mice, bugs, etc. I have seen more expensive and seemingly better quality ones. Mine work okay- but the more expensive ones send out alternating frequencies. My cheap ones are all the same sounds, so the critters can get used to the soundwaves. They do not bother larger household pets, but I think I read somewhere that pet mice, hamsters, etc. can't take the sounds. Good luck. I kill ALL spiders- gives me the willies to see them lurking around.

Shoes always worked for me. DH could always tell when there had been a spidey sighting. He'd come home and the bathroom floor would be full of shoes.

We had wolf spiders when we lived in Wichita. Huge, great monsters. I called the exterminator and told him to get rid of them. He said, "but lady, they eat all kinds of bugs!". I said I didn't care - it took 10 years off my life every time I saw one.

Hate, hate, HATE spiders. Would rather have a houseful of snakes than a single spider.

Ginger, get some glue traps. Set them around the perimeter of the rooms. They really work. And just as long as you don't have mice, it will be ok.

I still have nightmares about the mouse and the glue trap... shudder.

Chemicals don't work anyway because the chemical has to touch the body of the spider and not just the tips of the feet. Sticky traps are effective, the kind that are a sheet of thick paper with glue on one side. Fold them into a long triangle and set them anywhere you need to. Debra in VA See my quilts at

They prefer quiet corners, so don't give them any peace! Never heard of any odor that would discourage them. But different species don't seem to build webs where the remnants of a previous different web is, so don't clean cobwebs TOO thoroughly. I just swoop them up in the duster and shake them vigorously outdoors. But it needs constant vigilance. And they only get in when windows are open. So you might want to figure out where your spider door is if the windows are shut. Roberta in D

Good general cleanup inside and out, caulking, fixing screens, maintaining weatherstripping, etc.

Also, the presence of insects, silverfish and other small critters will draw spiders.

Hi Ginger I don't like spiders... at all.... ever! Outside, sure - inside, no way! I use some kind of gadget that you plug into an electrical outlet, and it emits some kind of high frequency noise that bugs don't like. Safe around dogs and cats, but rabbits or other smaller animals can't tolerate them. They work like a dream. You can get them at Home Depot. Good Luck!

I think spiders are very helpful, but since DH had a bite that went bad he is death on them. kiri is very jumpy about them and will holler for one of us if she so much as sees a pepper spider (the wee red ones that are about the size of half a pepper corn). Even I have to admit that the basement has gotten to the point of too much of a good thing, in spite all of our efforts. So after going through the basement with spider shot, DH has hung and scattered horsechestnuts hither and yon, and sprayed Florida water all over to deter them. It is a cheap enough solution, and if it works long term I will let you know.

Hedge balls (Hedgeapples) are supposed to keep away spiders and insects. DH and I tried a few when we lived in a mobile home as there were so many living in our skirting and then following the water pipes up and into the house. We didn't have a way to seal up the large holes, but I put some hedge balls under the sinks a couple of different years. It did seem to help some, but I'm sure that wasn't their only way in either. If you use them you want to make sure to put something you don't care about under them as they can make a bit of a mess. I was told that you can't get the grim from them off thus something you don't care about. I just took some aluminum foil and made a little bowl to hold them and then threw them with the balls when used up. These are a seasonal thing though. HTH

Thanks Taria. Steel wool is good for filling holes to prevent mice I know, I would think it would help with insects and spiders too. The problem was we weren't able to access the holes in the floor because of the way the cabinets were. We no longer live there. I do however still have a huge spider problem because of our cellar like basement so this thread is interesting to me too. So glad she asked.

Those things don't work on bugs or spiders because bugs don't have ears and don't mind vibrations. (I actually had a little black spider set up "house" right next to the one DH bought.) They do irritate me because I can hear them click at a 60 hertz frequency, like a bizarre form of Chinese water torture. Debra in VA See my quilts at

"A symbol of creativity." I like that. I like *some* spiders. If you ever have an argiope web on the eaves of your house, they are just a delight to watch. They're very beautiful, too. I have two this year, I'll post a pic. (And no, I'm really not a freak. Unless I can positively ID it as nonpoisonous, I would never let them nest on the house) Sherry

You couldn't hate spiders any more than me - I spot one and yell so loud that the husband comes running as fast as he can and gets rid of it - he picks them up and squishes them - I could never pick anything like that up - I'd have a heart attack first. I had a poker (from the fireplace) fight with a big black ugly thing the other day when I went out to water some flower pots - yech I hate those things - they totally terrify me. I'd take a snake any day.

I can't hear mine, it just has a tiny, little light on it to signify it's "working". I know what you're talking about though - my parents have the kind you can hear, and you're right. It was utterly annoying. I think there must be several kinds on the market. But, I really have had no problems with bugs at all, of any kind, since I invested in mine. I learned about them from a friend who had quite a problem with critters in her garage. She bought 3 of them and plugged them in, in various spots in the garage, and they quietly backed away, to someone else's garage :-)
