? wall hanging

A friend asked mo to quilt a wall hanging as going-away gift for her co-worker. She wants sometime along the theme of "dogs playing poker".

I saw a panel 36x44, but I think that may be a bit too garrish for someone to hang on an office wall.

I've never done a wall hanging and need ideas.

thinking.... broderie perse from some dog fabric, add some cards either same way as dogs or design some. as for dogs playing i'd think if ya dont want the actual panel its gonna be quite a project to get it to look right. if the co-worker is into cards, why not just something with cards on it. do three card trick blocks in a row to hang longways, 1 x 3 ft wide. add a heart/club/spade/diamond machine appliqued on it somewhere. that could hang on anyones wall without worry bout the look of it. i suppose it will depend on how much time/energy you want to put into this. tis all i a can think of at the moment. jeanne

You are such a good friend! IMO this request is so peculiar that your panel might not even be garish enough :-) I'd go with the panel. If you want to tone it down, do something like a "convergence": Slice the panel into vertical strips, maybe 2" wide (you decide) and alternate with strips of a contrast fabric. Something neutral like the black paw prints on tan, if you think it fits. Then your garish panel suddenly becomes art! Roberta in D

That's a wonderful idea! I couldn't think what I'd do when I read this post. But yours is a great suggestion.

I think I'll have to try this whenever I'm stumped. It might just be as good as that adage to add "in bed" to the end of fortune cookies. That sounds a bit off color; but what I mean is that it might be a good univeral idea generator.

Oh, yea, attic windows is a good idea. I can use various dog fabric with that block.

just had a weird thot. i've not done a convergence but would it work to converge/bargello in one or is that just too much of a good thing? you only mentioned vertical cuts, i thot it had cuts/resew both directions. i'll go google while i wait. brain is thinking weirdly now cuz i'm busy trying to keep warm. jeanne

I was thinking of that strippy one by Ricky Tims in the rainbow fabric, cut in vertical stripes so the 2 rainbows kind of cross each other going in different directions.

Another way to do it would be to cut vertical strips from the dog panel and from a contrast fabric. Sew these strips RST, keeping them in order. Turn RSO and press. Then cut more (narrow) strips from #2 contrast fabric. Sew the #2 strips back together, RST with a faced panel strip between. Then the panel image would be seen looking at it sideways from one direction, and #1 contrast from the other direction. Roberta in D
