Wednesday Evening Update

Oct 25, 2007 10 Replies

Fires still burn out of control this evening. Camp Pendleton has 3 fires on the base-- the base is HUGE, covers over 200 miles! The north end of the base abuts San Clemente with schools not too far. Received a call from the school district tonight that they are closing all school tomorrow. We will be notified tomorrow if school will also be closed on Friday. They did this for 3 reasons-- 1) students and faculty have been exposed to 3 days of poor air quality and they are concerned about respiratory problems,2) fire poses threats to our schools at the northern end and southern ends of the district 3) although no schools are under threat at this point, should that change, there are too many families with children at more than 1 school which would be a nightmare if you have to get children from more than 1 school should there be a mandatory evacuation.

We have absolutely no wind where I am so the soot is just sitting in the air. I have the house fan going, but it is becoming stifling at times. Have all the pictures in one area so that should we have to evacuate, I will just have to empty the one cupboard. So far we are safe, just not in a healthy situation.

For evacuation, can you lay your hands on important papers such as deeds, birth certificates and wills? What about everybody's prescriptions? Checkbook, cash, credit cards. Charge the cell phones. Pet papers? Some shelters won't allow pets, some won't allow pets without vaccination proof. I don't want to add to your alarm but if you're going to load the laundry baskets, you might as well think of everything you can. Holding you close, Polly

Taria,

I have the ac, unfortunately to add to woes, I have been unemployed for

2 months so I try not to run the a/c as I can't afford it. Should it become too bad, a/c will be turned one. Tonight, it got cool enough that I had to put on a light quilt.

Debbi > Hang in there Debbi. It is going to get better. I guess lots of the

8000 firefighters on the line. Over 700 square miles burned. Interstate 5 major route between Los Angeles and San Diego is shut down, fires have jumped the freeway. 15 major fires, some contained now. Attempted arson fires have been blocked, people arrested [Taria one was right outside Hesperia!]

Air quality is still very poor along the coast here. I haven't been outside except to get from car to building. It was 99 degrees here yesterday, expected to be the same today. It is over 70 right now.

G> Taria,

Great suggestion, Taria! those are the important things. I had a friend in New Orleans lose everything...couldnt even prove her house was hers. i wish she had had the forsight to get it together and get out early. Debbi, it's going to be over soon i hope. in my prayers.... amy

Ginger, DH would say that is my neighbor. : ( I probably shouldn't say what I think they should do to arsonist. Lets just say he doesn't want me on his jury. Taria
