What I really wish for

Cheryl's message made me think if what I really wish for this Christmas. I joke about my "me needs" list (another story for another time) but I really only want one thing - for my stepson to return home from Iraq safe and sound. He is only 19 but sounds like 38 when he gets the rare chance to phone home. He is actually the one who started the "me needs" tradition in our family when he would point to toys in the Sears Christmas catalog and say "me needs!" when he was only 3 years old. He didn't say much when he was younger, but he knew how to say "me needs" and we still use that phrase to this day.

He left for Iraq last August and is supposed to be home in February. My DH writes to him every day and is counting the days until he is home. I know how my DH feels about him being over there but "me needs" for him to be safe and sound until he is home!

Who else is waiting for a loved one to come home from the war? We need to huddle around these folks like a virtual quilt to keep them safe.

Hi Alice I will pray with you that your stepson comes home safely in February.

I'm not waiting for a specific loved one, but as a military wife, I am surrounded by people with loved ones gone, and pray for them all.

My DH wanted me to give you all a gentle reminder, though, as someone who deals with security matters every day. Please be careful when talking about your service members. Do not give their names (or yours) and any other specific information in the same conversation, such as location of service, when they'll be home, etc. Using phrases like "my nephew is deployed overseas" or "he'll be back in the spring" or "he's assigned to a ship", things like that...much safer. This is for their safety as well as yours. That's not to say you shouldn't share, because I love to hear about your stories...we just want you to be careful.
