what thread do you use for piecing?

Coats and Clark can be purchased in places like WalMart and comes in cotton or even a cotton/poly. It works well. I use it all the time because it is harder to find the fancier stuff around here and I usually need it right now, not after an hour and half trip.

Me too; since I also sew clothing I sometimes get stuck with 1/2 spools of weird colors :) ...and I hate to waste anything so if it matches what I'm piecing, I put it to work!!

I bought three huge cones of MasterPiece at Sew Thankful

I had purchased a couple small spools at a quilt show and really liked it. The price at sew thankful for the cones was great so I got the canvas, parchment and raven - a light, medium and dark for all my piecing. I don't think I have to buy any more thread for a few years!

I started with Mettler 50 wt. but after taking a class on being a more precise quilter with Sally Collins I moved to 60 wt thread. The finer thread really does help! I used Mettler 60 wt for a long time (and still have quite the collection for applique). Once I managed to find the DMC thread that Sally recommends and it was very nice and less linty than the Mettler. Then I stumbled upon Aurifil and really liked it. Even though it's labeled 50 wt it's fine like the 60 wt. Mettler.

My son has a quilt on his bed for the last 8 or 9 years that was pieced with the Mettler 60wt and it is in great shape. I dunno why the sewing machine man said 60 wt was too fine for a quilt with heavy usage. Maybe he only sells 50 wt and didn't want to lose a sale? Beats me, but none of my quilts have any problems at all with wearing on the seams.

I do order on-line. One local shop finally started carrying Aurifil but the rest have either the Metter 50 wt or Guterman 50 wt and I don't love either of those for piecing (but I do use them for quilting).

I like finer threads for piecing and heavier thread for quilting.

I'm in love with 100wt silk thread, too, Pat! I makes me drool just to think about it, and using it is even better. As you say, though, it's far too expensive to use for piecing -- but oh! what a joy to quilt with!

I also love it for dressmaking! :) If I can't get silk for a project, I'd rather use this or the YLI cotton than polyester.
