Thread for piecing??

I know there have been thread threads before (oooh, I made a pun LOL), but I really am confused right now. What kind of thread do you use for piecing cotton?? Inquiring minds (and one forgetful mind) want to know.

Thanks, Sunny

I use 100% cotton hand-quilting thread for both piecing and quilting. It works well, handles very nicely, and is simple to keep track of.

100% cotton. My very favorite is Aurifil, but it is a bit pricey. I also like the Essential Thread from Connecting Threads and use that a lot. It is better than a lot of the other less expensive threads and is very reasonably priced -- less than Dual Duty and the C&C Star brand on a per yard basis. I usually use a neutral color -- lighter for light fabrics, darker for dark fabrics. I won't use hand quilting thread for machine piecing; I've been warned that it may gum up the machine.

I prefer either Aurifil 50 wt or Presencia (60 wt is wonderful and so is

50 wt.) I've started using some of Superior Threads Masterpiece too. All three of these are very good quality, fine, tightly twisted threads. BTW, a bit of thread trivia for you...... Most threads are made overseas. There is an import tax on thread based on the number of twists per certain length. Which sort of makes sense.... the more you twist it the shorter the finer the thread and the shorter the thread. (Try holding a towel by diagonally opposite corners and folding it into a skinny shape. then start twisting. Measure before you start twisting and at a couple of different points in twisting it as tight as you can. It is amazing.) So more tightly twisted thread,of extra long staple cotton, while being less likely to create lint and stronger, is more expensive too, because there is more fiber in the thread.

There are many good threads out there. The more I learn about different ones, the more picky I get about the thread I use.

Yes, it does! I should have been more explicit in my reply that I use hand-quilting thread for both piecing and quilting -- I do BOTH by hand!

I really like Robison Anton 50 wt - I buy the 3000 yard cones. Only use off-white and gray - works for everything!

I'm into cotton thread for cotton fabric. I've seen polyester thread shread finer weight cotton after some use. I really like the cotton thread on the big spools from Threadart. I also use Star brand thread. It isn't as nice as the threadart.

I also have a few spools of other cottons.

Happy quilting,

Lenore

And not nearly as pricey as it seems, given how much more is on a spool than for many other brands! I love Aurifil. :)

Lately I've been using a cone of silver-gray masterpiece.
