Bottom Line Thread

I haven't tried bottom line for piecing, but have been using So-Fine or Masterpiece from Superior. They are also polyester and very fine. It's wonderful. Takes up much less seam room when doing small pieces and NO LINT! They withstand the high setting on my iron.

I like Aurafil cotton, and YLI finer ones for piecing.

I'm using mostly Aurifil 50 for piecing and YLI 100silk for applique, but I have some Bottom Line that is just the right colour for a project and I wondered how it was for piecing. I bought it for machine embroidery and never really tried it for anything else except a small sample of hand applique (good, but I prefer silk). Hence the question.

I have most of my applique "students" converted to fine needles and YLI silk - a huge step from crow bars and cheap polycotton threads. They can't believe the difference it makes! ((chuckle))

hehehehehe... I've been using YLI 100's silk for button holes and hand finished hems all summer: beautiful stuff!

I'm going to talk Machine QUilting with Bottom Line thread....I took a class with Karen McTavish, and she uses Bottom Line in the bobbin and in the top to do her awesome machine quilting. We used it in the Longarms in that class (APQS machines, IIRC), and it worked great. I bought a mess of the thread at that quilt show (12 big spools, various colors). Got them home and started quilting on my machine/frame setup (Pfaff Hobby Grand Quilter, if it matters), and found that my machine HATES this thread. I can't use it for machine quilting, it breaks constantly, even if I just use it in the bobbin. Sigh.

But I've been piecing with it on my regular Bernina machine, without any problem.

The whole thing of not using Polyester thread is some kind of old wives tales or something...poly thread now is different than poly thread was 50 years ago, or something. Personally, I'm not worried about it. Then again, I don't do heirloom quality type quilts. If I were doing a heirloom quality fancy quilt, I'd probably stick with all cotton, but I'm not doing those kinds of quilts.

Yeah - you are so right. GOOD QUALITY poly thread these days is nothing like the poly threads we were all warned off years ago. I think I will give this a go and see what happens. I have a project in mind that has a lot of small piecing and the finer thread appeals to me as I press seams open and I want to reduce seam bulk as much as possible.

If I decide I don't like it I will just have to make another quilt won't I LOL
