when quilts don't want to go where they were intended....

So, DH has a lovely youn coworker (married) who is expecting her first child in September. I thought a nice quilt would be good for her. DH then reminded me that his former office always put a quilt together for the first child in the family, born while a parent was employed there. So...he volunteered me to coordinate a quilt for this young lady, with blocks from the other women in the office (only 3 others at this point).

Ok, not a problem (well...that will be discussed later), but that means I put the quilt that I was doing on hold while I wait for the others to get their blocks finished and back to me. Today in SUnday School, we were reminded about a baby shower for one of our classmates, expecting her second child (first child is severely disabled and takes a lot of their time money, and energy, so they really don't have a lot of extra...anything). I automatically thought of the quilt I was working on. The focus fabric has various saying relating to God and his omnipresence in our lives. Seems perfect for them!

So, I ran it by DH tonight because he knew that I had been working on it for Jenelle. He said he didn't see why I was making her a quilt anyway when I have already given them our crib, highchair, and all the clothes that DD has outgrown, not to mention the "men's diaper bag" that I made for her hubby and the clothes that I couldn't resist buying. Guess that clinches it.

Have to have a little talk to the quilt tonight (yes, I talk to the fabrics/quilts, pray over them, sometimes argue with them )....that way, everything is cleared up, both in my sewing room and in my head.

Now, onto the blocks that have been delivered for the office quilt for Jenelle . I said, "12.5 inches or 6.5 inches so that I could sqaure them up and whatnot. Well.....none of the women have quilted before and one told me that they used a regular ruler and tried to estimate everything (!!!!!). They all found

a great resource and used some of those patterns. However........NONE of them are anywhere near the sizes that were discussed!! LOL

No big thing, really. I squared everything up, then figured out what the smallest size was of all the blocks and made all the large ones that size and did the same with the smaller blocks. So, it won't be perfect or anything, but it will work....combination of BRIGHTS (lime green, for Jeanne and pinks) and PRIMARIES....I *can* make this work!!

I have a tentative layout on my design board and have to decide what I will be doing to fill in the holes.....what sashing and what other blocks. SO far, the only block contribution I have made was to mimic the 2 small blocks that were sent to me...different orange, so I have mine in the corners and the ones that were sent in the middle of both long sides. Will get a picture up ASAP so you can see what I'm working with.

Now, we have had a wonderful family weekend, and I am off to do the last bit on the tropical soldiers angles quilt, then finish the baby quilt, and hopefully start on DSs duvet cover (he REALLY needs this as the space quilt has started coming apart at the seams - guess that just means that it is weel-loved).

Larisa, rambling as usual

Hmmmm. The Tale of Two Quilts. :-)

Larisa, you're a good woman--first being so sweet as to redirect the quilt you were making for Jenelle to another couple who obviously needs lots of TLC; and secondly, for working with the newbie quilters' newbie blocks. LOL! While Jenelle's blocks may not have all been made with skill, they were certainly made with affection, and that will show through.

Can't wait to see the pics!

I"m sure the quilt for your DH co-worker will turn out lovely that you will be putting together......it will be a challenge for you to balance everything out!!!! Don't forget to have fun with it!!!!! You got to give the non-quilting ladies credit for even attempting the blocks for it....and all made with love for the recipient.

Trust me, I give them lots of credit. I have told them all my opinion of their blocks (despite being wonky, they are fabulous for first attempts!) and have promised to do my best with them. The first to turn in her blocks swore she never quilted before, but her blocks are closer to perfect than my first attempts were!! The second (DHs boss)..umm...great effort for a first timer, and she didn't mind when I said I was going to square them up so that the edges were even. The third lady...I had to call her and ask if she had been lying to me! She has blocks with diamonds in them and everything!!! I don't do diamonds (not enough patience to deal with them)...not pieced from triangles, but whole-piece diamonds!!!

I will upload the pic as soon as i am done typing this so that you can see what I am working with.

who needs pink??? Keep it unisex, she might have a boy next. I just clicked on your link without reading which folder it would be in....got there and thought the logical folder to find the layout would be "new baby" Deanna is quite cute by the way. Finding the right folder, you have some great blocks there.

Hi Larisa, You are really sweet. First, doing so much for Janelle and then taking on the office quilt project (not even your own office!) and then letting your quilt go it's true direction. Sometimes quilts are like children -- they go off in a direction you never imagined. LOL.

The "office blocks" are all beautiful. I love the bright colors and I think babies like them too. They aren't the right size, but you can just see the love in them. And they all seem to be really well made. Have fun putting them together.

nice bright colours but boy what a challenge! this makes Rick's quilt (Pati's top is *done*!) seem easy by comparison. with the colours you have now a nice screaming fuchsia would fit nicely and add some pink into the mix.

personally I'd make another 2 orange/blue pinwheels and turn them and the 6 you already have into two larger blocks. then I'd get out the pink and purples and make 4 not too complicated blocks with them - since you already have a theme of two blocks of each going you can make a pair with pink and a pair with purple and it would play nicely together. shashing could then be pink too if you wanted

GAG!

Sorry, way far away from the top of my list. However, it might be the only thing that will pull all of these blocks together

Okay, so blue, yellow, pink, lime green, and "screaming fuschia" have all been mentioned.

Looking over the blocks, and following the "rainbow" I have: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue...so..the only color NOT in these blocks is a purple....then, of course, there's black and white.

Now, if this were for me, I would do black because it would really make the blocks pop out, but it isn't, so I will root through the stash and see what I come up with.

finish school clothes, make a duvet cover, finish Mom and Dad's quilt (started 6 years ago!!)...all the while teaching and entertaining my children .

Wow, those are really bold colors! But the baby will love them. (Pastels are for more sensitive adults. ;-) My vote would be yellow sashing or possibly white. However, I don't think there is any color that is out of bounds--except for maybe black since it's a baby quilt.

I knew it was going to sound crazy. It was that green that jumped out at me though when I first glanced at the picture. If it were a garment rather than a quilt, I'd try to blend blues.

I am a green lover. I have lots of greens in my stash. Only one however that would come anywhere close to being called lime green.

I like Jessamy's idea of making a few more blocks, this time with some pink and purple.

How about Turquoise for your filler color? I think it would go with all the colors listed. Anywho, that's my 2-cents.

PS. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that rambles on...

AND WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a long look at all of the prints used in the blocks and turquoise was the one color that stood out for me. I have actually gotten 2 rows together - pictures will be in quilting folder at:

look at the last ones Having said that, some (all?) will notice that one of the sashing strips is wider than the rest. It was done on purpose because, with all the busy fabrics, I didn't want to do anything too overboard for the label. Instead, I will use the EuroPro to embroider the names of the ladies who contributed to the quilt. Backing will probably be solid turquoise.

Larisa, who just remembered that there is washed ivory flannel for a set of crib/toddler sheets....somewhere > How about Turquoise for your filler color? I think it would go with all

Oh my, oh my, oh my!!

I like the idea of more blocks - simple blocks - to break up the business of the blocks that are already there. As far as color is concerned - yikes. I'm a very symmetrical and might opt to put the two lime green backgrounds diagonally from each other to balance things out. But, I just went back and looked at it again and noticed that you've already started stitching the turquoise color as the sashing...an interesting choice for this interesting quilt. It works with the blocks and breaks them up a bit...good luck!!

Thanks Sue,

The blue faction here was decidedly the strongest, but I didn't want to put a dark blue in, thereby making a dark baby quilt (yes, the blocks are bright, but with all dark blue sashing, well.....). So, I showed the pics to some other quilters who aren't members here. They agreed with the blue faction, but said to go lighter. One dear lady suggested I pick a light colors that is present in all of the prints, hence the turquoise....which I have about 5 yards of...lol.

Only have the first 2 rows done because I was getting a headache from all the colors (this isn't my first choice in color combinations, but hey, I think the other ladies did excellent as novice quilters, so I will work with it as best as I can).

Will probably get more done later today. Baby quilt is finished, buttons have been sewn on DSs "blue flame shirt" (forgot to take pictures, will do that this afternoon), and I am ready to get cutting and sewing on his duvey cover before the current one shreads completely.

Nice to see you here again, Sue!!
