Whew!

Yesterday I finally got up my courage to cut into the chiffon yardage my future DIL gave me to make scarves for her bridesmaids. Since this yardage was special ordered from the company that makes the bridesmaids dresses, I didn't want to screw it up!!! I got the 5 pieces cut from the 2.5 yd length....and they were straight and not too choppy. Yea! My new serrated Ginghers helped. Today I got my serger satisfactorily set up to do a rolled hem and I got all of them nicely finished. I'm so relieved! I used two spools of a poly embroidery thread in the loopers and a metallic thread in the needle. It has just the slightest sparkle. I also used strips of solvy as a stabilizer under the fabric as I did the rolled hem. I didn't have any "pokie" threads. Boy am I relieved! I just have to wash away a little bit of the solvy and press....and I'll be able to deliver them this weekend. Then I can get back to the 40+ treasure boxes I have left.....but I have

120+ done! As Martha would say, "That's a good thing!"

Well done indeed, Kathyl. The first cut must have given you a scary moment. Marvellous that you finished them without a disaster. I'm so impressed! At least you don't have the usual worries that brides' mothers have in the months before the wedding >g< Yours are unique. Mind you - I hope you haven't forgotten to start looking for your outfit(s). The more wintry clothes will soon be in the shops >g< . In message , KJ writes

Oh wow! Kathyl. I can't tell you how happy I am for you to have that accomplished - and! it sounds like, beautifully. Oh my, how wonderful. Yipeeeeee for you. Now. Is Patti telling us that you don't have your wedding ensemble(s) safely and finally ready? With the troubles all of us have been having trying to find clothes that aren't of the Hootchie Mama variety, that's not an easy one either. Methinks the Mother of the Groom is supposed to wear beige and keep her mouth shut. Just for fun, (yeah, right), look over at Barrie Pace. There are some lovely things there at sale prices just now. Don't know if there's anything there that would suit you or that you could pay for - but it might inspire anyway. Polly

Yea! Kathyl, when you first wrote of the proposed project I thought 'I'd be nervous to attempt that! One slip of the shears or one tangled thread and the project is a loss!' So, I congratulate you on successfully finishing the scarves. Now don't leave your own ensemble too late. Even though the star woman will be the bride, you do want people to comment 'Gee, the groom's mother looked lovely too!' You might check out Coldwater Creek. I like their style, and the service is excellent. NAYY. Pat in Virginia

Sounds like all went well with the scarves -- good for you.

This advice is too late for you but an alert to others who may have weddings coming up. When my kids got married, they had their dates set about a year in advance. I started shopping for a dress immediately, because I hate shopping under pressure and wanted plenty of time to find something. In both cases, I found lovely dresses on sale months before the wedding.

Pat is correct. I haven't yet started shopping for dresses....plural. I have DS getting married at Thanksgiving and DD at Christmas. However, if I find the perfect ensem, I wouldn't hesitate to wear the same thing to both. I plan to start that hunt by Sept 1. I'm not familiar with Barrie Pace.....I'll google and check it out. Thanks!

Good for you, Kathyl! I'd have been a nervous wreck cutting into that special fabric, so I admire your fortitude. :) Good luck finding your outfit and finishing the treasure boxes. :)

Congratulations on finishing your "scarey project #1"!!!!!! GO GIRL!!! (I'd have been too scared to even make the first cut on those!!!) Now you can relax and take a deep breath.... and then get back to work on the treasure boxes (which will seem like a breeze now that the scarves are done.) Please post pictures. We want to see the finished products and gloat along with ya! ME-Judy

I have just one more scarf to press. I had to soak the "Solvy" stabilizer off. Well, I didn't "have" to. I spent quite some time last night very very carefully cutting off the excess from the rolled hem. I figured the less of that stuff that melts, the better. Then on the very last scarf, I tugged on the piece and it tore off "like buttah". It just zipped off around the scarf with no excess left. I had been afraid that I would stretch or tear out my hem if I tried to tear it off. Geez.

Here are the pictures of the scarves and table favor boxes I'm making for future DIL and DD's weddings. I played and played with the differential feed on my serger but I still didn't quite get the rolled hem as flat as I would hope. But I doubt it's much worse than ready to wear. So even though I'm usually a perfectionist on that sort of thing....I'm not going to worry about it. They are now DONE! Unless she wants them shorter....which would be easy. I'll leave my serger threaded just in case. :-)

They look beautiful. Well done you! And those little boxes with their 'shamrocks/clover leaves' are lovely. Beautiful colour. . In message , KJ writes

Thanks Pat! I'm thrilled that you knew it was supposed to be a shamrock/clover.....or did I already mention that? We are having a semi Irish flair to DD's wedding...that's my contribution. Now we need to find a bagpiper! I don't think I want to import DD's friends from Scotland to come join us. I used a varigated. (what's the word? ombre?) green for most of the boxes ....it shades from a really dark forest to a lighter shade. I think it will look fine.

Beautiful job on the scarves. I probably would never have gotten up the courage to even begin by cutting the fabric!! Love the treasure boxes, too! You are one talented woman!!

An Irish or a Scottish bagpiper? The Irish pipes have a softer sound than the Scottish, I think, and the piper wears green and saffron rather than a tartan (unless he wears a made-up Irish tartan). Happy hunting! . In message , KJ writes

Great job, KJ! I don't know much about serging, but the scarves look like I would have expected them to, so I think you did an outstanding job! And the table favor boxes are so cute. Have you decided what you're going to put in them yet?
