WIP's and UFO's

So glad you asked this one. On Tuesday I told my quilting group that I finally feel like a real quilter (started 2 years ago) because I have 4 things going at once - 2 on the wall (I'm a hand-piecer and one can get really boring), one sandwiched and ready to start hand quilting and one with

16 12" blocks finished and stacked on a shelf. Love the PIGS - a new phrase? - I have 2 of those too!

Well, with a quick mental glance into the sewing room, I have 3 WIPs that I am steadily working on. Not a lot compared to others, but I'm sure that if I actually got up and took a look I would find MANY more. UFOs...hmm....lots. PIGs...LOL...now *those* I have about 20 or more. Not all of them have been started, but I have accumulated everything I need for them .

Of course, these aren't *all* quilting projects. SOme are clothing projects, some are cross-stitch projects, and some are knitting projects.....I think I need to pick 1 or 2 things and stick with them until I'm finished instead of rotating through so many different things.

errrr......

I have about 8 WIPS

last time I counted I had 65 UFO's that was over a year ago and I know I have a "few" more now...

if he wants proof he can come on over and count them for me... ;-)

Oh, I like that one Mary. Yes indeed. PIPs provide a good excuse for some S.E.X. PIP wouldn't even be considered a PIG as you it is still in the planning mode. I have lots of PIPs that's for sure.

If I were to include all my WIP, UFO, PIG, PIP etc...... I definitely cannot count that high! For a great therapy session you may want to listen to Nadine Ruggles' podcast episode 7. It's a great episode that helps you alleviate any guilt you may experience due to UFO. It's all part of the creative process and with that comes lots of trail and error. According to Nadine "UFO are a byproduct of creativity". Yep, like Cheryl, I have no guilt from the byproduct of my creativity! :do

Enjoy your creative process!

I've completed about 40 quilts in the three years since I started quilting, but I also have at least 10 tops still waiting to be finished and one table runner almost done, I don't like having too many UFOs kicking around, so I at least make sure a top is completed before I move on to another project. I have to be in the mood to do the actual quilting, I prefer the design process and the piecing. Then the "bug" will bite, and I'll sandwich and quilt for a week at a time just to finish up.

A few months ago I purchased an EZ Quilter II for machine quilting and last month I finally put it to use. It does a good job. There is a wooden frame to hold the quilt and a "skateboard" thingy to hold my Janome 6500. You move the SM around the quilt by the little handles on the "skateboard". So far, I've only done all over meandering patterns, but at least I'm finishing my charity quilts for the guild.

Don't expect husbands (or wives for that matter) to understand everything. You are not alone! I always have at least 3 projects going, usually more. There's something being quilted -need to take breaks from that because it's heavy work. So there's also something being pieced by machine. Plus the rctq BOM blocks. Plus a hand project in case I need to take something along, or in front of the TV. A hand quilting project for 1st thing in the morning, cup of tea outdoors if it's warm enough. Plus a varying number of WIPs waiting for the right sashing/backing/whatever. And in between all that, I keep little triangles or other scrap bits to sew together as leaders/enders.

The reason for all this is a. to keep from getting bored; b. to always have the right project for the time or occasion. And yes, they all get finished eventually. Roberta in D

I've done a pretty good job lately of keeping my projects down to a minimum. I do however have a few WIPS and UFO's.

My main WIP at the moment is a queen size lone star quilt which now needs the other 3/4's of the background stippled, I am excited about it because it is my first time stippling and it is coming out well, but it takes so damn long! My second WIP is a 48 point (i'm pretty sure, but I might have lost count) mariners compass that I designed for a quilt show next year. The 3rd WIP is a multiple lone star that I work on when I feel like it, I'm not sure what size it will be or how many stars will be on it, with my luck it'll just keep going and be big enough to use in place of broadloom carpet in the living room LOL.

UFO's not too many of them and they are both a few yrs old, just lost interest and I will finish them at some point but if I look at them now I'll want to rip them apart and start over (I peiced them when a 1/2 inch off the intersection was close enough to me or the top 1/4 of a point cut off was ok) UFO 1 is a double sized four winds quilt top, the pattern was taken from quilters cache and is done in the same colours, half was put together on the serger and half on the sewing machine, I really should burn it. UFO 2 is a triple irish chain I started to make for my best friend, got bored with it and it is sitting in a shoe box waiting for rescue.

On top of the WIPS and UFO's I have a couple other tops I work on when I have nothing else to do. My mother gave me some tops that she had painted. She uses those Cameo paint marker things with the rubber bulb thingy on the top and she paints blocks with flowers and other fancy stuff. She had a stroke about 18 yra ago and does this all with one hand (her wrong one at that!) and she can quilt by hand but since I have really gotten into it she decided to hand them over to me to quilt for her so I work on them when I need a break from my other projects.

Perhaps an easy to relate to analogy would work better for the non-sewing/stash impaired to understand.......

Explain that when you go grocery shopping you do not buy ONE bag of onions and bring that home to cook and eat till gone before you make another trip to the grocery store. Or after doing shopping of a full list of items, adding to the cart those items you see and need/want but weren't put on the list, come home and as you unpack you prepare and or eat each item until it's gone before unpacking and or preparing the next. Those who quilt and sew seriously need a well balanced diet and well stocked pantry(stash) to feel well prepared for all likely events including daily and spur of the moment occasions as well as unexplained cravings. If this fails to get the point across you could always feed him only onions for three days followed by two days of only celery followed by three days of only hamburger followed by several more of only bottled water, etc. I'm sure before the week was out the light would finally come on.

Howdy!

1 WIP today, in the hoop being quilted; will piece another tomorrow.

No UFOs --- I don't *make* UFOs so I never have them; no PIGs, either.

Ragmop/Sandy-- Finished is my favorite kind of quilt ;-D

Well...... Last time I tried to do a mental tally, I ended up with something like almost 20 tops that need to be quilted. And around the same number of WIPs and UFOs..... and I have added some more. Right now I have 2 I am working on hand quilting, and my Quilted Diamonds and Laurene's Legacy Jane are hand work in progress. Several more as PIGs, which need to be done up since they are for patterns-to-be. And lots more fabric. And, I just bought new quilt software (some of Carol Doak's, and Linda Franz's Inklingo and the first QD book and CD.) Have some more stuff on order and need to get moving on it all.

But I have told my self I can't put the new stuff on the computer until I get the class samples done that are due in 3 1/2 weeks.
