Alcohol Inks

Has anyone here used the alcohol inks? I saw a journal yesterday at the crop someone had brought from a class they did at a LSS. They had covered it with aluminum tape they picked up at Wal-Mart. Then used small squares of the tape where they had etched designes on the tape from the back to give a raised effect - they did some freehand and some with templates with a stylus. These squares the taped randomly all over the journal. Then they used the alcohol ink to sort of stain the whole thing. The effect of the aluminum tape was beautiful - theirs was in red. I want to try this, but wonder exactly how to use the ink. Does it just rub-on like stain? Or is it painted on like paint with a brush? I never got the chance to ask more about it yesterday as I was teaching a class on sewing on LO's with my sewing machine I lugged to the crop. Help? Suggestions? Tips? Sandy

I used this recently at a class. We took thin aluminum sheets, used a punch to cut a circle, punched a smaller hole to make it into a tag, took a crimping tool around the edges, and used an engraving tool to engrave a letter/words on it. We just took the alcohol ink (Blue) and put some on it and let it sit for a bit then dabbed some of it away/around. It looked neat. A bit messy though. It works like a stain you put it on and dab it off/rub it in sort of. We just used a bit of paper towel but some sort of dauber would be ideal.

I haven't used them but I saw them on the scrapbook show the other week... she made a lovely shiny marbled metallic frame and tag by sponging the different coloured inks onto aluminum sheeting. It looked great and I wouldn't mind trying it myself!
