OT: A thieving bad day

Well my son left this morning around 8 am and didn't notice. But when DH went to get into his car, he found the passenger door open, his window smashed and his brand new GPS, which he got for XMas and hadn't even installed in the car yet, gone. We didn't even have to call the Sherrif's office as a deputy was driving around, we were the 3rd victims on our street.

I am so p---ssed! It was my idea for Rick's siblings to get him a GPS and he didn't even have a chance to have it give him directions, not even once. In fact GPSes were the only thing stolen in the other two vehicles as well. Only difference is that Rick had a protective coating on his car window and so the whole window didn't shatter as they did in the other two cars. The thieves had to actually get the door opened. The deputy did dust for prints, but I don't think there was a good print left behind. Too bad they didn't cut themselves and leave some DNA behind!

M-C That's horrible. I would be pi***ed too! Hopefully they will mess up soon and the cops will track them down. People like this never think things through and mess up after a while, like when they go to the local pawn shop (duh).

That's just awful MC. Insurance probably won't even reimburse either. I hope they catch who did it.

Sorry to hear about this MC. They ran an article in our local paper about how often these GPS units are being stolen. They said even when the unit is hidden out of sight the thief will look for a mark made by the suction cups and then break into your car to look for it.

MC, I am so sorry to hear about your day! People are unbeleivable any more. What gives a person the right to go into a car that's not there's and take stuff that doesn't belong to them. I can't get over the nerve of people. Hopefully they will slip up soon and get caught. Something like this happened in the area that I work in and a week later the guy slipped up and got caught.

A friend of mine in Portland... her husband's GPS was stolen 2 days after they got it. They had just moved to the area and his parents bought it for him, so he could get around the new area easier. The police said it's the number one thing to steal right now. They haven't replaced it.

Hi.

In NYC (not sure of FL), under our penal code it is Petit Larceny-from car and it is a misdemeanor (3-5 years and/or fines). We've been having a rash of them here in Flushing. although you may take them out of the car remember the ring of shame on the windshield where the mount goes it gives the potential thief an idea that it might be in the glove box.

I just bought myself a navagon 2100 because of the airport traffic to Kennedy that ties up my commute home.

I hope your inLaws have the receipt for the unit so you can include it in the report for the lost and stolen part of the report. the reason I say that is the store that sold it can look up in their inventory which one sold and give you the serial number and when the perp's turn it on the sherriff's department can then track it (hence why it is a GPS).

Hugs, Kate
