OT: Knees, knees, and more knees

DS #1 had knee surgery today. Took him to the dr. on Tuesday and surgery was scheduled for today. He fell off a half wall at school, last year! I'd say you need to go to the dr., he'd so "no I don't, I'll be fine. he finally asked to go. (I didn't ask why he was up there or how he fell off, he told the nurse that the wall jumped out from under him! lol ) The MRI showed that he had a possible torn cartilage behind the knee. Well, it was "fringed" so that was cleaned up, the dr. found that he's also torn his ACL about half way when he fell off this wall. It's healed and is very stable. He is of the opinion that it "scar in nicely". DS also had some damage to the plica shelf in the knee due to traumatic injury(that's what I had to have repaired/removed), like falling off a wall, he also has some softening of some of the cartilage on the front of the knee due to the injury. The Dr. cleaned up and fixed all that could be fixed, tested the strength of the knee and said he will still be 100% in about 6 weeks. I have far more faith in this dr. than in mine and know that he knows what he's doing. So it looks like he'll still be on track for basic training the middle of June, that's his main focus.

My mother went back to work last Monday after she had a knee replaced just before Christmas. She's doing great and looking forward to having the next one done.

I am doing allot better. I've been working with the physical therapist 5 days a week, only allowed a certain number of visits but he told me I could come in on their slow days and he'd make sure that I did all the exercises and it would be "off the record". He knows how much I want to get back to work. My knee still swells where the lateral release was done, not sure why. I've lost allot of flexibility, doesn't seem like that's going to come back. The PT doesn't think so either, he's been doing this 20 years and really knows his stuff. I can now kneel on the knee and put some weight on it so that's good. We're not sure if I'll ever be able to squat again, that's part of the flexibility that I've lost. But I can live with that, as the pain is gone. I see the dr. on Tuesday and will ask to go back to work, full duty. We'll see how that goes. I'm crossing my fingers.

Hopefully DS1 has learned his lesson in all of this and has learned to listen to his mother when she suggets going to the doctor. :-) I'm glad that he's doing good, though, and still on track for basic. He would be crushed, I think, if he couldn't go to basic.

Glad your Mom's doing so well! YAY!! Does she know when she'll do the other knee?

I do hope the doctor clears you to go back to work. I know you've missed it! If not, can we run over the idiots in workers comp? LOL

Three generations of knees! Oh my! I'm glad to hear that DS1 is doing ok and that you're almost back to doing the job you love so much! What's important though is that you don't try to go back to fast and cause more permanent damage. You know there is a lot of you in DS1, LOL!

You can well imagine that I am thrilled that your mom is now well enough to go back to work. I'm 5 days out from mine and feeling slightly panicy!

Big hugs to you and I'll be praying that the doctor clears you for work!

If he couldn't go to basic we'd all be crushed as we know how much he wants to go! But I feel very good about this dr. Mom sees him when her dr. isn't available.

Mom wants to have her other knee done ASAP. Right now her dr. wants her to be able to put the new knee a bit further under her "center of gravity" when she gets up. So she's been working on that. She see him again this week I think. She's looking at first part of June. It takes a while to get blood banked and what not. But she also has to take care of another medical problem ASAP. Hopefully that will be taken care of with a week or so.

I'm all for running over the idiots at workers comp. Actually I wish for them to thave the same problem and have the same delays. Then they might have some compassion for others and at least not be as nasty!

I think that panicy feeling is normal. Mom had that same feeling too. You'll do just fine and we'll be saying prayers for a speedy recovery!

DS is better today. He did alot of whining and complaining yesterday, mostly because he was hungry!! He ate so much the fridge is cleaned out as well as the odds and ends in the cupboards and the freezer, no kidding! I wasn't sure there was going to be enough food in the house to sustain him until he was full! He finally quit eating around 9 last night. (wish I could eat like that and still be slim like him! LOL)

Wow Kenda lots of repaired knees in your family. Glad that DS 1 is feeling better. Hopefully he won't eat you out of house and home!

Don't be in a hurry to go back to work. Make sure you are fully healed, so you don't injure it again.

Glad you mom is doing so well.
