This morning while reading the NG I heard an odd noise and went to check on the guinea pigs. Our old lady of the bunch was in her house scratching. I lifted the house up and discovered she was having an apparent seizure. Got a towel, picked her up and she had an even bigger siezure. I sat with her for a while, thinking that she was going to pass, she alternated between being still with labored breathing and what seemed like seizures. DH and I decided to take her to the vet, he was off today but came in for us. We had her put down, she fought it; had to have two injections. But she's at peace now.
We had Robin for 5 yrs and her previous owner had her for about 2 years, making her a bit over 7 years. Most guinea pigs live anywhere from 3-5 years. In an ideal setting they can live to be 8. She had a litter of 5 babies, only 3 survived to adulthood, with one passing away last year. Seems morbid but before we buried her I put her in the cages with the others so they'd know she was gone. Now they are all very quiet and hiding, do they mourn? Her mate seems to be taking it the worst, he was very distressed while she was in the cage seizing. Hope he doesn't go next, he's
8 yrs now.DH drove me to the vet, he's upset. He's really attached to the piggies. Kids are doing okay with it, they are old enough to understand the circle of life. Robin is now in our "pet cemetary".
Thanks for listening. I know everyone understands how attached people get to their pets, even if they aren't crazy about guinea pigs.
Off to snuggle with Robin's mate.... Kenda (remove nospam to use email addy)
