OT: my son

Well, it's been a long few days. The other day I took our youngest son (16 mos) for his "quarterly" checkup and shots expecting to hear "ok, everything's fine...here's your shot's....see you in 3 months..blah blah blah..." but what I heard was..."We're admitting your son to the hostpital for severe anemia". Of course, my first response was "no, you're not!" Here I thought that I brought a healthy kid to the doctor and they're telling me that he's very sick. He runs, jumps, climbs, eats like a piglet...but there were problems with his blood tests. He was so anemic that they were almost at the point of considering a blood transfusion.

Soooooooooo, we spent a little time in the hospital so they could run tests and monitor him. They kept asking me if he's sick-- not to my knowledge. No cold or anything for at least the last couple of months! We came home yesterday and the short answer is that he's severely iron deficient. It's like he's not absorbing it or something. So, we get to give him iron drops orally 3x a day and in 2 weeks they run the tests all over again and see where we're at.

The thing they weren't telling me until the tests came back and they were less worried---was that they were afraid of lukemia. GREAT! (sarcasm) FUN! They said that the original test results made the dr think of early stages of cancer or lukemia. Soooooooooooooooooooooo, they've basically ruled that out--unless he doesn't respond to the extra iron doses.

So, that's what's going on here. I'd appreciate any extra prayers you've got hanging around. ;-) If I'm not on-line or posting, this is why.

Thanks! :-) Theresa in IL

I will keep your family in my thoughts. That said, although childhood leukemia is, of course, worrisome, it is highly curable. The prognosis for children with many types of cancer is much better than it is for adults.

Dear Theresa, Prayers are being sent to you and your family!! Hopefully, the iron drops work there miracles for him. My DB was very Iron deficent when he was small ( I think around the same age) and my Mom had to give him Iron drops as well. Years ago the drops made he teeth turn Grey. They are no longer that color; keep in mind he is now 40. I don't know if they changed the composition of the drops but just in case they didn't tell you about the color change. God Bless to you!! Oh Theresa! That must have been so scary! Lots of prayers said for your DS and you and your family! Thought I might share this with you quickly....when I was sixteen, I kept fainting for no reason. When you turn

16 in SA, they come around at schools and ask volunteers to donate blood. Of course most of the kids do, as you get to miss an hour or so of class. Anyway, as soon as I donated my pint and got up, I hit the floor like a sack of potatoes again. I few weeks later I got a letter from the blood bank to immediately go and see my doctor and for him to contact them. I was so scared!!! In the end, it also turned out that I was anemic and got a lot of iron tablets. Today, years later I'm totally fine. All other symptom I can remember of that time, was that I got cold easily, especially my feet...lol

Anyway, I hope your DS is better soon :))

Keep thinking positively. My oldest son who is now 26, was tested for leukemia three times before he was 3 years old and each time it turned out he was anemic. First time he was tested (with a bone marrow) he was about 5 weeks old, and he was 10 weeks premature. They were 99.99% positive that's what he had. Wrong! So, keep thinking positive. He'll be fine!!! :o)

Theresa, healing vibes and get well thoughts winging your way for the little one. I know that these things can be really scary but you have to be positive in your thoughts that this is just a childhood hiccup. Kids have weird stuff happen and once treated they get better. Often the medics never find an answer as to why the condition occurred in the first place!

When we lived in Australia, a friend's little boy started to show bruises up his shins, on every vertebrae of his spin, even his shoulder was badly bruised when he woke one morning. She was terrified to go to the dr. in case she was accused of violence toward him. I was at the docs that day and said that if she didn't tell him, I would....as I knew he was not abused. Turned out he had almost non-existent platelet {?sp}count and could have bled to death with a simple bump on the head. Platelets are what is missing in Haemophiliacs {?sp} They took him into hospital for tests and treatment...thinking Leukaemia was the culprit. After blood transfusion and steroid treatment, he started to improve and was let home with careful monitoring by doctor and hospital. He continued to get better and the treatment was stopped when things were normal again. Symptoms never returned and to this day they don't know what he had or what was the cause of his downturn. All they could think was that he had had a virus that knocked his immune system for six and his body went into overdrive and forgot to switch off.

If your little one is SO anaemic, it could originate from many months back and you would perhaps have thought everything had returned to normal after a cold/flu/tummy bug. Internally, that may not have been the case and his little system has been compromised. With anaemia there would have been few if any outward signs to indicate a problem. Now it has been picked up, with treatment and constant monitoring, hopefully things will normalise soon.

Best wishes, Marilyn

Theresa,

I'm sure most parents can relate to what you're going through and it is extremely stressful. But take heart in your son's "normalcy", his jumping and climbing and great attitude, and don't let him get worried. Put spinach in his diet and give him the drops and go on your merry way. And the 2 things I've learned the hard way to always keep in mind whenever you are dealing with doctors:

  1. When trying to find the source of a symptom, always eliminate the most serious, life threatening illnesses first
  2. Never take what a doctor or nurse says on faith; you are the only advocate for your kids' health and you need to investigate things and ask questions until you are satisfied that you have all the answers

That is awful! Very scary. I hope all goes well and my prayers are with you and your family. My Daughter is 3 months and I get worried every time I visit the doctor for her check ups, simply because my family has alot of things that get passed down. But she is well and so are my boys.

God gives good people things they can handle, and he wont overburden you, It WILL make you stronger in the end, and more than likely alot closer to your family and son. Although it is hard to get any closer than a mother and her son.

My prayers are with you! Do you need anything? Anything at all? I am making to trip to the Build a Bear Workshop, and I think I will make your son a Bear that's getting better, so he can take him to the doctor with you and not be so scared. If that is something you wouldn't mind, email me !

Did they run a kidney panel? If the kidneys are not functioning properly the body does not produce enough red blood cells and severe anemia sets in. It's possible for the kidneys to function but not remove toxins so you may not have noticed anything if they are not functioning. Make sure they check this along with the leukemia.
