OT: New addition to the family

As I told everyone last month we had a guinea pig that was sick. Well, she passed away. It broke my heart, but I know that she is on the other side of the rainbow bridge waiting on us, playing with the other guinea pigs and pets we've had. The vet seems to think that she had sand in her kidneys (very tiny kidney stones). He went to a seminar and did 40 hrs continuing education on Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Ferrets. He took the problems we've been having with our piggies to the vet Dr giving the Guinea pig seminar and they reviewed the symptoms. Seems that since in the wild our little piggies don't live as long as they do in captivity they develop allot of sand built up in their kidneys. Nothing really to be done for it. Surgery could be done but they generally don't survive 24 hrs after surgery. So we are down to just 3 guinea pigs. Our elderly Spot, 7 yrs old, his daughter Petunia, 5 years old, and Sophie approx 9 months.

We received a call from the humane society, an elderly lady called them rather desperate. Seems she's lived in this elderly apartment complex for 8 years and has had a Netherlands Dwarf Rabbit for 2years. The apartment complex was recently bought and the new owners told her either the rabbit goes or they both have to go. She has no other place to move to so she was having to give up the rabbit. After allot of discussion with DH we decided to take her. Snowball is bigger than I thought she would be. The pictures online are deceiving! LOL She is adorable, except for the red eyes! She is obviously stressed, and only used to being handled by an old lady. (DS #1 said, "gee Mom no wonder she lets you handle her! She's used to old people!" The snot!) She is having some adjustment issues but I am positive we will work them out. DH and DS's have nicknamed her DR (Devil Rabbit)! LOL She does not like it when the boys reach inside her cage to pet her, and she lets them know! But we haven't had her 24 hrs so I am sure she will settle in soon. Just lots of reassurance and love is all she needs. I have put pictures up in my webshots in the Miscellaneous album. I just had to share our newest addition!

Snowball does look very cute. Can you imagine how big she'd be if she weren't a DWARF rabbit. snicker. I'm sure Snowball will adjust to your loving home just fine. Is the "old lady" going to visit now and then?

My kids do a kind of yodel now and then that goes like this "Olda lady, olda lady, olda la dee whooo." Nice huh?! If it weren't so funny I'd cuff them one. haha

This is a very good looking Netherlands Dwarf. If she's been kept inside by her previous owner, she's probably in good health. I would take her to your vet for a checkup and shots, and to see if she's still intact (not spayed). Rabbits can be trained much like cats -- they can learn to use a litterbox, like to hide under things (so a ground-floor kitty condo is nice for them), and can learn to come when called. If she is intact, and you plan to keep her as a pet (not breed her), I would definitely get her spayed. Rabbits in heat are almost as noisy as cats in heat, and have a much higher pitched howl. It definitely makes your teeth sharp! LOL!

Just be gentle with her and she'll respond by snuggling up to you. Tell your "boys" to get her used to them by sitting next to her crate and talking to her in a low, encouraging voice. As for any other animal in a strange environment, noises she is not accustomed to will frighten her. Once she is used to male humans (hmmmmm... do any of us EVER get used to male humans? ), she'll be fine. And rabbits do well as companion animals with guinea pigs.

(I used to have rabbits when I was a teenager, but got too attached to them. When it was time to send one off to be someone's dinner, I cried for days. So we had to get rid of them.)

I'm really glad you're going to give her a home. Not everyone would take in a rabbit.

Long life, prosperity and chocolate, Raz

I must not be getting all the posts, because I never saw Kenda's post. Kenda and her DH have such big hearts...that or they're a sucker for cute animals. :-) Have fun with your new baby!

What a cutie snowball is. She reminds me of the snowball I had when I was a kid. Our snowball used to chase our dog (a terrier) around the yard. Have fun with her.

Haahaa!! THat's exactly what my Mom said Lynne! The old lady only drives around Little Rock and we're about 17 miles from her apartment. Too far. I have sent her pictures of her in her new home. I felt so bad as the lady was just bawling when we pulled away. Had me crying too!

Aren't kids a hoot! Love the "yodel" of your kids! heehee, gotta love the snots otherwise we'd have to shoot 'em! LOL

Heehee! I'd love to have seen her chase your dog around! Right now our lab just wants to sniff her! We moved her cage last night as he was smelling her so hard he was pulling her fluffy tail into his nose through the cage bars! LOL It was funny to watch (though not to Snowball!) and then he'd sneeze!

We know she was taken very good care of. I'm not sure if she's been spayed or not. I didn't know they could make noises like a cat in heat! Will have to find out what her "status" is on that! Don't need any noise like that.

Currently I have told all the boys in the house (all 3 of them) that she is off limits. Not hand in the cage, no fingers through the cage. They are not to feed her, water her or attempt to do anything in her cage. Since her cage is now on top of the guinea pig cage she is up where she can see everyone, I have put a towel on 2 1/2 sides of the cage so she has some since of security. This way she can get used to the house noises, sights, smells. She will get used to the boys as they tend to and love on the guinea pigs. After a week or so I will begin "introducing" them to her one at a time and letting her get used to them before starting with the next one. It will be a long process but I think that it will all work out.

She is litter trained, so I ahve to say that is really nice! I put her in with the guinea pigs and she sat on the little one! LOL That didn't go over too well! Then when I put her on the floor today I put the girl piggies down and they followed her around! It was soo cute!

We had rabbits when I was a little girl. I don't remember too much about them, except we ate alot of rabbit. I also remember my parents telling us kids to not get attached to the rabbits as they were for eating, not pets. (Yeah right! Like that's gonna happen with little kids!) Though we did have one in the house as a pet. Don't rmember much about her.....'cept she ate holes in my bedding one winter as she was nesting!

Too cute:>)

Sad story though. I can understand no new pets allowed, but what do I know. It only takes one tenant not looking after their pet properly to ruin it for every one.

Glad she found a good home for it though:>)

Kenda, I'm so sorry to hear about your piggy, but at least she had a good and long life. Congrats on the new addition! Snowball looks so cuddly! It must be difficult not to "bother" her with "squeezies" all the time :)

It really isn't bad Judy, once you get used to the idea.....Don't think I'd do it as an adult though! But when we were growing up that was how we ate. Butchered our chickens too. Man how I hated plucking them!!

I too can understand no new pets, just "grandfather in the old pets. You also couldn't tell there was a pet in the apartment, no odor at all.
