New addition to family - furbaby

We have a new addition to the family a rescued kitten. We went to the re homing centre about an hour from here and was chosen by a white male kitten. He is cute if not somewhat mischievous with one orange eye and one blue eye. He isn't deaf, that's for sure, even though he is white. Apparently he was abandoned in a local town, but we believe after looking around on the Internet that he may be a Turkish Van Cat, who are meant to be able to swim! Haven't thrown him in any water yet to test this theory!! He has a medium to long coat, but no undercoat, which seems to be this breeds trait, as well as odd eyes.

Our two other cats - one is 18yrs old and just looks at this youngster as if to say "let me sleep and I'll leave you alone aswell, else there will be trouble!" and our other cat 6yrs old, just thinks that it is fun to have someone to get into mischief with! So we are bitten and scratched, but he has finally started purring this week. He was so nervous and kept stealing and hiding food from the kitchen, but he is learning that there is food in his bowl that is perfectly good to eat.

Well done, Jan. Could the mischievousness be due to language differences - I mean, maybe he doesn't understand Parisian French >g< . In message , Janner writes

So you are a new owner of a Turkish Van. Oh are you in for some fun times. Be very careful when soaking in the tub. You might have a bathing partner.

Yes these cats love water. My old fella lived to about 10 years old before his death. He was a very loving cat. Nothing is sacret, yarn, fabric, quilts, nothing.

My old male cat loved to go for a ride in the truck. When he found his lady love he put her in the truck and came to tell me they wanted to take a ride. So don't leave your windows open on your car. The top of the refrigerator or the top of the microware are favorite lounging places.

Be prepared to have a lap full of cat everytime you sit down. If you put them on the floor they will promply hop back on your lap. Maybe on the back of a recliner where they can play with your hair.

Turkish Vans are true traveling companions. Traveling for a long time and not in a cage is absolute fun for this breed. They prefer looking out a window. Mine always laid in the back window. Once yours has adopted you, you are in for many loving hours.

Fascinating! So, from Cornwall - with its own arcane language, to a region of France with a special dialect, too! It's so nice to see you popping in from time to time. . In message , Janner writes

Usually, white cats who are odd eyed are only deaf on the side that has the blue eye. This of course means that they can hear you quite nicely with the one good ear so it might never be apparent that the cat is deaf on just one side. He sounds like a fun new QI -- hope he learns to quilt properly and not make a mess of everything -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

He came with the name Bijou, which we are keeping, because he actually comes to his name, which is more than one of our other cats does!

He is a little sad today, as he has just had his first lot of vaccinations, dear little thing - although he is not that little.

I need to sort pictures. He is adorable although last evening, swinging on and pulling down curtains was his latest game!

Yep! SW England to SW France and both have "countryside" accents! Shame that they are not the same!

I keep an eye on you all, it is just now that I am finding more time to pop in again. Life is even busier here than in Cornwall, I am meant to be preparing a lesson plan for school tomorrow, where I am a volunteer English teacher - yes they now all have Cornish accents!! Revenge ;p) I teach 6-8 year olds (split into 3 classes) and it is great fun - I take in a toy frog that helps me to demonstrate words, we do lots of singing and action games, so it is better than an aerobics class!! I won't take the cat with me yet, he'll steal the show!

Congratulations on your new baby! I love kitties... I've been told that with white cats sometimes the blue-eyed white-cat deafness can be unilateral, the affected ear being on the same side as the blue eye. Not trying to say your critter is affected, just an interesting tidbit. It sounds like he's settling in nicely and your younger cat is having some fun with him. Any ideas for a name yet?
