OT: New babies in the house!

Okay, as many of you know we have guinea pigs in our house. In a little over a year we've gone from having 8 to just 3. Yes, we love our piggies! We recently lost 2 of our beloved pets so we had room! Though we were enjoying only having to clean up after 3! LOL I got some of the front room to use for my sewing/scrapping/stamping/computer/crafts. Well some how the humane society gave our phone number out to someone, telling them we are a guinea pig rescue.

Yesterday DH recieved a phone call (I was at work) from a woman who told him that she had 7 guinea pigs and a host of other animals and needed help. He called me, asked me to deal with her. So I called her back, talked with her. Told her that we could come over and try to help her identify the gender of the 5 babies, other than that I didn't think we could help. I suggested putting an ad in the newspaper.

Well, we went over to her house this morning after I got off work. She had

2 adult guinea pigs 1 male/1 female (she'd been told they were both female, yea right) 5 babies, 1 rabbit, 2 dogs, 1 dog on the porch that wasn't hers but she was feeding it (I told her, it's yours now! LOL ) 3 cats, and a very sick kitten that her daughter had brought home last week. Along with 2 kids and a boyfriend in a single wide mobile home. I was suprised her home didn't smell like animals, I fully expected it to really smell, but I think she spent most of her time cleaning up after animals! Poor lady was just worn out!

We tried to figure out who was what. Good grief we couldn't tell! So I told her that we could take the babies only off her hands. She wanted to keep the male GP as he was big buddies with the rabbit, wanted to keep the mama and a baby girl. We left her the one we thought was a girl. (now I think it's a boy!) Told her that she should consider putting her foot down about NO MORE ANIMALS brought home! We then called our vet, asked for a "group" rate to check them out and identify the gender so we didn't end up with more babies! Bless his heart he gave us a good rate, and didn't charge for all the ear mite meds we have to give them. Other than the earmites they are healthy.

These babies are 2 months old, adorable; though not used to being handled. I couldn't leave them there as they were not in a good environment, even thought the lady was doing her best. They smelled like "cat" so I know the cats had been marking the cage they were in and she was so over whelmed. I knew DH felt the same way when I told her we'd take them, he didn't bat an eye.

We came home, set up some cages we'd put away, gave them baths then introduced them to the other 3. So far all are doing very well. They seem to be settling in nicely and much happier! Alan had told our boys (young men) that I'd probably bring home more GP's today, they groaned, and moaned but bolted through the door to see what they looked like! LOL

I put their pictures in my account they are in the folder labled new babies. Thanks for letting me share! (anyone for a baby guinea pig? You can have any of the babies but the little runt, she's my favorite, No really, I'm serious, if you want one we'll find a way to get it to you)

I forgot to mention that they will all eventually get names. We just had to identify them as Guinea Pig #1, 2, 3, 4 so we could keep track of gender and vet paper work. Ideas? Anyone want a guinea pig?

GP 1 is SO cute! I've never had a guinea pig, though. How hard/easy are they to take care of? Growing up, I've had / taken care of hamsters, cats, dogs, geese, ducks, and even a pig...but never a guinea pig. How are guinea pigs with little kiddos? Enguiring minds want to know! LOL

I like the soft hair ones best, though they are all cute! Wish I was a guinea pig person, but I'm afraid not! LOL! Can't imaging Radar and Nuku taking kindly to trespassers either! Hope you find them new homes, except for the rnt, which I have a feeling you'll still have in your "care" in two years!

It isn't only the pet shops! I got a cat from a shelter once, whom we were told was a spayed male. Radar called her mommy and we changer his name from Fred to Freeda! Needless to say we kept Radar and when they were old enough, sent Freeda and her kiddies back to the shelter! (At the time our house had burned down and we were living in a rented house.)

It is amazing how often they are wrong! My experience has taught me to 1. never buy from a pet store. and 2. get a vet's opinion before combineing the pairs to keep unwanted babies from happening!

LOL!!! Doesn't that figure! I'll bet the shelter was shocked to get them back.....

We'll look for homes, but frankly I have a feeling they'll all be in our care in 2 years! LOL Alan has decided his favorite of the new group is the smooth haired female so if any go to a new home it will be the males....who are cute in their own way! lol

You guys are scarring me. My kids got 2 Leopard geckos last year from the breeder and he said they were both girls. I sure hope he knows what he's doing.

The first one is the one we brought home. She's so sweet. She's very timid and shy right now when it comes to DH & the kiddos since she hasn't learned their noises or smells.

Heehee, the first one is Deb's new baby! She is a doll. The two white ones are so funny, we still haven't decided on names for them. Currently DH calls them UB1 & UB2. (stands for U Be Ugly #1 & U Be Ugly #2) I keep telling him and the boys we REALLY need a new name! LOL

You will know when the time is right to add another pet. If you decide you want one of our wild haired babies email and we'll see what we can do to get you one! Okay, I'm sorry, don't mean to be pushy. I love the babies. The little runt looks like the wind blew up her dress! LOL What a funny little baby!

Don't worry Deb, she'll get used to them, eventually! She will always go to her Momma first though and she has adopted you as her momma....
