new house - curiously not OT

Got the call today around 4 that everything had finally gone through (someone had forgotten that we had agreed to 'buy' the heating oil in the tank so after we had signed and all we had to produce a check for

199 gallons of oil in order for escrow to be able to close) and that the previous owners were out.

So we decided to explore our new dominions before we had to pick Sofi from daycare at 5:30. We packed the two cars and drove up there. When we get to the house, first thing I see is the front door is wide open. Second thing is a quilt on top of the garbage can! Walked in, called, nobody was there. Still lots of boxes around. Doesn't look like they are out. Odd. Call my agent, he assures me the seller's agent has told him they were out.

We sat and waited for them to show up. It gets too late to pick up Sofi on time (I had to empty one car to put her car seat in the back and didn't want to just put it anywhere because we didn't know what was going on with the house). Turns out they were at the bank getting the $$, and they blame the delay on our agents (our agents said everyone was waiting for the oil company to come up with the amount the oil costs - who knows). They had no idea the front door was wide open. I think they are a little out of it, they also claim they had requested their phone service to be disconnected a while ago but when I called the phone company they said they had only done it that day, i.e. after I called to verify mine was going to be connected tomorrow and they say they couldn't because there was no request to disconnect the existing service).

We unload one car into the garage, and before I leave to go pick Sofi (got there 50 minutes late, but our daycare people are cool) I mention the quilt. There is another, made by her grandmother, and she was going to use them for padding their stuff in the van (arghh!), but she is happy to leave them with me because I obviously appreciate them!

So, to make a long story short, I am dissapointed I didn't get to play in my new house, but they'll be totally gone by tomorrow morning, we have the keys, and I got two older though damaged quilts! From what I saw one is in pretty good shape except for a large hole that goes through batting and backing and all, and the other has shredded areas and has been tied like a comforter, but the top looks quite old and probably used to be hand quilted. I love them anyway, they came with my first house! I only got a quick glimpse, so I'll have to inspect them and decide what to do with them...

All of these stories about house "transitions" not going as planned make me feel so fortunate that the purchase of my very first home went smooth as glass. Of course, I basically had my realtor "hold my hand" through the entire process, and we became friends and are still in touch.

When you get a closer look at those quilts and figure out age, etc, please let me know if you need some "old" fabric. I have some squares of very old fabric that I got at a yard sale, all colors, and I would be glad to give you some to patch your quilts. I think they are about 3 inch squares. Let me know...... I'll happily contribute to their well being!

Sounds like you are almost there. When do you actually move in? That will be a tough day for you, but at the end of the day, it will be your castle. Congratulations!

When you get all moved and halfway back to "normal", I'd love to get the Washington ladies together - would be great fun! Just let me know when things calm down and we'll all figure something out.....
