sort of OT: Visiting Indianapolis, scrapbook stores?

Looks like the Fire Chief has decided that he wants to get me more "involved" in the goings on of the fire department. While I don't sit around and not train, I do try to take classes, but am turned down. Sooo, I found out last month that he was thinking of sending me, and DH to the instructors conference in Indianapolis, IN. I just looked at him and said, "I am NOT an instructor nor do I plan to be one!". He just looked at me and said okay, but you're going. If you want you can bring your boys, we'll reserve a room next yours but you pay for it.

So today DH brought home the regestration forms and the booklet. They actually have some very good classes. Chief also doesn't want DH and I to take the same classes. DH is a Captain and I'm a Firefighter so there are many classes that don't pertain to me as I'm not an "officer" and many that don't pertain to him as he is no longer in the "trenches fighting fire". We are not taking the boys, they would have to be out of school for a week, right after spring break, which is when they take major tests. So DMIL will be coming over to stay with them after they get home from school each day until they get on the bus in the morning.

So anyway, I don't plan on being in classes all day everyday for a week. I do plan on shopping!!!! (DMIL wants some quilt fabric, so have to find at least one quilt store) Has anyone been shopping in Indianapolis? Are there any good scrapbook stores or rubber stamp stores? I would sure appreciate any info. I need to dig out some of my magazines and look in them for stores as well. But I thought that if I could get confirmation that would be even better. Thanks all!

Sunday will be traveling day and registration. Monday and Tuesday are what they call H.O.T (Hands On Training) and very busy. I'm hoping since we'll be regisitered really early I'll get my first picks. The other 3 days are classroom short lectures and new product displays. Looks like it might just be DH, myself and the Big Chief, his wife. We should get our schedule in March (course is in April) so I'll let you know if I can shake free for a good meet. Might be able to meet in the middle and at least have dinner and visit!

After doing some investigating looks like some of the store may be promising. I will enjoy it! No kids, no pets for a week!! Too bad it several months off! Though that does give me time to prepare.....must get directions from hotel to stores (I learned that from one of our own, thanks M-C!)

Kenda,

here's wishing you more luck in getting to indy than I had two weeks ago! Your wonderful state trapped me there for three days! :) LOL. Actually, dh and I were traveling to Indy for Christmas by way of AR (Texas to AR to MO to IL to IN) the day after that snowstorm hit and we got as far as Archadelphia before we knew the trouble that lay ahead. Then we only made it from Archadelphia to Benton in the next three hours! When we finally made it off the road in Benton there were no hotel rooms at all and we spent the night on the floor of the local Days Inn in their conference room with about 10 other families. Of course, I thought that was bad, but the next day, in 9 hours on the road, we only made it from Benton to West Memphis!!! Talk about crazy!!! We spent Christmas eve in a hotel in West Memphis...not my idea of fun :( Anyway, we almost gave up on ever going through AR again (since, what should have been a less-than-1-day trip ended up being a 3dayer...) but decided to give it one more shot coming home from Ohio (where we went after Indy) and AR redeemed herself well :) The last time we went through the roads were all under construction and it was like a washboard the whole trip (I think they hadn't poured the topping on the roads yet and it was the under-ridging) and then this time with the ice and snow... But the trip back through was just fine and there were no glitches at all. We made it from Columbus, OH to Benton, AR our first day and the rest of the way home the next. Anyway, here's wishing you better luck and no snow! :)

Oh my!!!! I won't be going until April. That should help! Wish you had had mine or Deb's phone numbers, you could have stayed with us! We'd have at least given someplace soft to sleep! I'm not sure why the AR transprotation director still has his job after all these years. Seems like he doesn't know how to remove the ice and snow! On Christmas day the roads were still bad and we saw (I was at work, off I-440) 4 road graders go by, on flat beds! Not being used to their abilities! it's like that everytime we get wintery weather.

Oh and the roads, it wasn't under-ridging. They were like that ALL the time. The Governor gave the highway department a huge budget for the last few years to redo the interstates. I have to say that was the best money ever spent! It's nice to go from one side of the state to the other without feeling like you've been driving across railroad tracks!

Next time you're going through AR besure to let one of us know you're going through and I'll give you my phone numbers, you can always call and I'll do what I can to help you out. Or maybe we could meet?

CC I was on that same road, Little Rock to Memphis on Dec 23rd and it took us 7 hours! I don't think I've ever seen roads in worse condition and I lived in Canada for 40+ years, in Quebec where it gets really cold. I had actually taken some pretty nifty pictures of the roads but unfortunately I was playing with my new camera and erased all the pictures accidentaly.

I hope that you will let us know if you are ever in this area. I should be around here until mid May and my craft room is the last thing I plan on packing up, so we can meet and play and share!

LOL Kenda, I will certainly look you all up next time we're up that way. We were trying to make it to Indy in two days (left our home on Thursday morning early and planned to be there by Friday afternoon) or I would have planned some more play time. Unfortunately this was a bittersweet trip. Christmas was supposed to be spent with dh's family (his first with his family since we were married almost 10 years ago) and then the real reason for the trip was the visit to Columbus and my grandparents house. Grandpa has inoperable cancer and has maybe 6 months left to live and so this was kind of a "last visit" thing knowing that he'll most likely not be around next Christmas. Plus it was his 80th birthday and so all three of his kids and their SO and me and dh were there for the first time in over 20 years. It was a crazy time and since I'm the only living grandchild it was also a very hard time for everyone. I think Grandpa knew it was probably the last time he'd see us and it made it very hard, but I am so glad we had the chance to spend a little time with him while he's still with us. And of course seeing my grandma was great. She's planning on moving to Texas to live near my mom and her husband when Grandpa's gone so I'll get to see her more, but she's sure having a hard time right now... She turns 80 in a couple days and she and Grandpa have been together since they were 14! That's sure a long time to spend with someone and I know this is really hard for her. Anyway, not meaning to bum anyone out, but our "on the road" time was really just as short as we could make it so we could spend all the time available with the families. Next time though, I'm planning on taking a more leisurely trip so I can make some stops along the way!

OOH OOH! Kenda!!

Lucky you!1 If I had to move somewhere and given a choice, Indy would be on top of my list. I love that city, although the peopel there are not as frienly as southerners or OKIES!!!

I do not know of specific shopping stores, but the city is actually rather easy to get around. I-470 is key!! (or is it 465?) Anyhow I know how to go!

I assume you wil be on the west side near airport? One place that you nad DH need to go see is the motor speedway museum. Even if you are not interested in auto racing, it is worth it and very informative.

Have fun and don't spend too much! You floozy you!! LOL!
