Who to send care packages to???

Hi ladies,

Maybe you all can help me out. Each year, we have a tradition in my family of making quite a few candies and cookies. This year, however, there's a slight problem... See, we're ALL on low carb diets (except sister and her hubby, but she'll be the one taking lessons this year on how to make everything...). Well, I don't want to give up the making tradition, and have to pass the knowledge on to the newlywed sister, so who can I send these out to? I originally thought I'd send a couple of care packages to "the troops", but the USPS and the military are discouraging that this year. I also thought about a senior center, but most of the stuff is harder to chew (peanut brittle, butter brickle, etc.) and so I don't want to do that. I'll be dropping off a batch at the firehouse, but would like to mail a package or two out... Any ideas? Here's what I traditionally make (some of these recipes you in the swap will be getting!):

Caramel corn (from a 125 year old recipe) Peanut brittle and/or cashew brittle Butter brickle (like English toffee) Truffles (usually kahlua and rum flavored) Spice cookies Swedish butter wafer cookies Candied pecans Fudge and/or divinity sometimes Three Kings cake after the holidays (around Epiphany)

Anyway, these are all tradition and I love making them (makes me feel connected to my great grandparents who gave the recipes to my grandmother who taught me). So, suggestions?

I will make a few calls today to find out where to send packages. As some of you may or may not know, I am a military ( Army) wife. I hope I can help. I will post the information in case anyone is interested. One place to check in with is your local Red Cross office. If they cannot take the package from you, they can probably point you in the right direction. Jacqui

Thanks Jacqui, that would be most appreciated. And it made me have a DUH! moment... my dh's father is retired AF (chaplain) and is still working with the chaplain service... I bet he might be able to find out...

My main post office has "Dear Santa" letters that they give out maybe you could get a couple from yours if they do it.

Operation Military Pride is an organization my friend runs. I had the pleasure of meeting her last May after knowing her online for over 7 years. operationmilitarypride.org Arlyn runs it and is a great supporter of troops. She's a former military wife. :)

HMMM< I can't imagine who would like to receive a care package like that (wink wink) (LOL)

Just kidding, but I bet there are lots of families that would really appreciate the thoughtfulness. Check with your local schools maybe?

CC....I'd love to have your divinity recipe.

As far as who to send the goodies to......what about the police stations, other fire departments, ems workers, maybe there are orphanages or homeless shelters nearby....the possibilities are endless!

Good luck! S

Quick--let me send you my address!! LOL! Seriously, I bet if you call any minister they could give you some names of families that would really appreciate it. Often this time of year, needy familys get on "lists" and get gifts they wouldn't get otherwise, but those families who aren't really poor, yet have nothing but the basics, get left out. Know what I mean? If you want to wait until Christmas to pass them out, I would go to police and fire stations and give them to those who volunteered to work on Christmas. They usually don't have much family and don't get homemade goodies!

what about a womans shelter? I know they must be feeling displaced and homebaked stuff would be a bright spot....

CC Iam with Susan on this, would love to have your divinity recipe. Homeless shelters are a good idea as there are children there. Just want to say what a wonderful and generous thing you all are doing! Hugs,

Sabrina :-)

How about a meals on wheels program? I coordinated desserts for a year at our local church. The holidays were always hard to get people to commit to baking for us! HTH! Kelly in FL
