Does anyone know anything about the Xyron Personal Cutting System? How does it compare to the Cricut?

As far as I know it isn't out yet. I have talked to them about it and they have no inventory. So it either isn't on store shelves yet or it is selling so well they can't keep them in stock.

Check 5/10/2006 for discussion on this.

This is what I had posted about it:

"A friend of mine bought one and brought it to the last crop. We played around with it and it seemed to do what was expected. We had some trouble getting the shapes and letters off the sticky pad, but we were new to it. It did take a little time to figure out the settings for the sizes, but after we got the hang of it we were going to town with the two cartridge books she had purchased with the machine. If I remember right it can only accept a 4x4 piece of paper/cardstock at a time, but will use the max space available to do as many cuts as possible. That is the main reason I'm looking at the cricut - it will do up to 11.5 X

Is this the Cricut (I thought it was) or the Xyron Personal Cutting System? I thought these were two separate units?

They are two separate machines. You can see a xyron on ebay:

My Xyron personal cutting system just arrived today.

I have to say it is a nice little unit as far as how it looks and feels. I did find it hard to get the cut-outs off the sticky pads but can see why they need it that way (you don't want the paper to move.) I was a little put off however about how flimsy the shape books are. I realize the pages are made out of Tyvek which won't tear. However, they seem kind of cheap, especially given their cost. Like the Sizzix they seem to strive to get you locked in to buying expensive shape things for them. If it isn't the plastic die-cuts of the Sizzix it is shape books.

Right now I don't know if I would recommend one or not. They aren't cheap and they are limited to 4X4-inch paper pieces. I also wish for the cut out size when you pressed the + or - button it said on the little screen normal, large, small. I am also a little worried about how large the small size cut out is. It isn't very small especially with the letters.

Is there a usb port on it?

No. No USB port.

I wish someone would make something you could connect to your computer and cut your own TrueType or OpenType fonts and clipart with. Something that didn't require them to keep milking more money out of you.

But, then where is the fun for them in such a product.

I thought Craft Robo was something you can connect to the computer and it will cut pretty much any shape you want?

They sell CD's to be used with the machine but I don't think they are required. They run about $400 bucks, require a pc and they aren't portable. I guess it depends on how you will use it, if portability and the need to always been hooked up to a pc is a problem then one of the standalone cutters would be best.

The Cricut has a mysterious usb port........I won't get my hopes up though because my replaytv has a usb port and they never did come up with a use for it.

The USB ports may be for future expansion like an external hard drive that holds all of your shapes or something like that. Who knows, it maybe a good think that they have them but of course they may never use them either.

I believe that the wishblade cutsout truetype fonts and clipart. It is $400 but you can use any font that you want with it.
