I've had cats and no, you can't trust him not to burn his nose. You can't even really trust him not to do it a second or third time. Some cats (dogs, people, iguanas, pick your species) are slow learners. You really need to keep him away from your work area. Not only are there numerous sharp, pointy, hot and otherwise hazardous objects about, getting brand new projects all cat-haired up is just gross.

Most cats are wary of excessive heat. In any event, a cat will only burn his nose once, just like they only walk across a hot stove once.

That's not a bad idea even without a cat. You never know when you might get distracted by something else (phone, door, etc).

As I type this I have my spray bottle of water next to me on the computer desk. One or two quick sprays will give most cats pause. I have a new kitten and I want to make quite sure she understands that cable, cords, etc. are NOT for chewing on!!! A bit of cold water in the face is totally harmless but unpleasant enough to get the point across.

Al-the-cat likes to bat at my rotary cutter. Luckily, the room where we keep his food, water, and litterbox has a door on it.

He curls up and sleeps while he's in there -- then gives me a lengthy talking-to when I let him out. (Especially when he was curled up next to the door, which opens in.)

Mine is hiding somewhere. Haven't seen her since I got home.

I guess I'd best continue to keep a close eye on him when he's around and the iron is on. I just can't believe how close he gets to it when sniffing it! Currently my over-the-door neck traction unit is on the door to the spare/sewing room, making it difficult to close and there's no other good door to leave it on long-term.

I do like the spray bottle trick. It's convinced Puddin' to stay off the kitchen counter and convinces him to get down from the dinner table, though he keeps returning to look out the windows. Maybe I'll try it when he gets near the iron. I suspect I need to just learn to live with him trying to attack my scissors as I cut. But I can always distract him into another room.............

Donna, The dog is intrigued by the noise. Whenever I'm running my printer my one dog is glued to my side. Don't ask me why??? AK in PA
