Black crepe

Unfortunately I have need to make a black armband for my son to wear in his cadet uniform at my DFIL's funeral. The specific wording from the uniform regulations is: "Personnel in private mourning may wear a mourning band of black crepe, 8.3cm wide, around the left sleeve of the uniform, above the elbow".

So what does it mean exactly by "black crepe" & what could I uses as an alternative if I can't find any locally?

Thanks

I'm assuming that you have a limited amount of time and don't have access to a fine fabrics store. Thinking along those lines, a crepe substitute might be 'in house'. You need something soft, dull and very black. See if you can find an old coat that you could steal the lining out of - maybe using the 'wrong' side so it would have the proper dull appearance. You won't need a big piece. If there's a Thrift shop closeby, you can probably find an appropriate black fabric - maybe the lining inside a dress or jacket using, of course, the somber side instead of the one with a sheen. Just hoping to help you, Lizzy, and sending sincere sympathy to your and your family, Polly

One more thought - check with your florist. They could have ribbon of the appropriate width and texture. And - the funeral director probably has this figured out before. Polly

Thanks Polly, funeral director was my first thought, but the ones they had have absconded over the years. I shall have a look at what I have that is matt & black. To be quite honest, no one else at the funeral will know the exact fabric it should be, and I doubt that any of the cadet officers (all youngsters) would know either. If necessary it will be black Kona cotton, because I *know* I have that in the stash.
