black on black

Can anyone recommend some fabric sites where I can get a good black on black. DD#2, she who is about to join the police force has requested an new quilt, same pattern as her original quilt (Bears Paw) but in gun-metal and black. I have the grey but am having trouble finding a nice black. All suggestions gratefully received Have a good day

Hi Heather,

I had the same trouble finding a true but still somehow vibrant and rich black on black about a year ago and came across one by Robert Kaufman in their Quilt Gate Collection. Unfortunately the quilt shop has since gone out of business (retirement).I checked the selvage does but it does not have a design number or anything other than "Quilt Gate" and some oriental characters on it. I had been looking for about a year before I found this one and the owner said that she couldn't keep it on her shelves. I would personally be hesitant about trying to buy this online without a product number, but if you have a quilt shop nearby that carries Kaufman fabrics, perhaps they can help. This piece is by far and away the best black I've ever come across.

Hope this helps,

Diana from Gulph Mills, PA

I've used Keepsake Quilting's "Amish" black; it's very nice fabric. I'd recommend it for sure, (unless you have 3 cats with white bellies like I do!!) Keepsake's shipping speed can be kinda iffy, though.

There are two blacks that we have enjoyed using - one is called 'freckles', the other's name is 'confetti'. Both are black but they have pindots of bright colors to add some life. You know I couldn't just use plain black which seems to say 'this is a very serious occasion. When I want serious, I'll go look at the prices on the gas pumps. =( Polly

Thanks Sherry. I've used Keepsake before and had no real problem with their shipping. I'm on the West coast of Australia and I actually had an order from them delivered within a week. Its not always that quick but mostly I've found them OK. I did check their site over the weekend but didn't see anything that really grabbed me. If I can find their catalogue I might have another look. Thanks. Have a good day

Thanks Polly, DD has a very definite idea in her head. I took her shopping last weekend and it took ages to find the grey. All the blacks were either b & w or the patterns were too big. But we will find it. a couple of years ago I found a black that I loved but can't find it anymore. I knew I should have bought the bolt!!

Have you tried Makower UK ? They do some nice tone on tone fabrics

?range=137&offset1=8&offset=42 Most UK quilt shops carry their fabrics, but I can't find any Australian shops in their list.

Hard to show the blacks on screen :(
