Collars

Hi folks,

I am still struggling with collar--mine look like S*?/1!

Here's what I'm doing. I interface the two pieces, then sew together with points. Turn it right side out and push out the poinst--so far I'm OK

Now, when I try to attach, using the notches, circles and any other little landmark the pattern says. I can NEVER get it on so that it matches and looks even. If I pull the facing up first, its too bulky. If I don't pull the facing up first, it wrinkles. If I follow the directions and put on the back, the front wrinkles, If I try to put both front and back on together, they won't match.

What am I doing wrong here.

I heard/read somewhere that if you cut the bottom piece 1/8" smaller it helps it look and fit better. I tried it once and it was fine, but it could have been dumb luck...... But don't try it until someone confirms it, because I am not sure.

Hi Jon,

You should only interface one side of the collar. The added bulk might be part of the problem. Also, don't assume the pattern is correct. I've used plenty of patterns where all the marks don't match up properly. I usually mark the end points for the collar and the center of the collar and neck and pin at these points, then pin out between the pins. Finally, be sure to grade and clip your seams and understitch the facing. It will reduce the bulk and help everything lie flat.

Good luck! Juliette

Make sure you're sewing the seam line to the seam line. If you sew a bit outside it, the garment edge will be too small and the collar will wrinkle because there's too much of it.

Is this a shirt collar? Does it go on a collar band? Do you have separate under and upper collar pieces?

After you've turned and pressed the collar, have you compared it to a tracing of the collar, minus the seam allowances? I'll bet you have distorted it a bit during pressing, and it may need some re-pressing, maybe even recutting and sewing.

Can you give us the pattern number that's giving you such grief?

Dear Jon,

Once you have sewn the collar together, it must be kept on top of your work when you apply it to the neck. If it doesn't fit, did you stay-stitch the neckline, and clip to the stitching? I don't like to do this, but it will work if you're having trouble making the collar fit.

The seam allowances must be exact. And, when attaching anything to a circle, i.e., the neckline, the seam allowance makes the circle smaller. Stay-stitching and clipping will help.

I don't trim the bottom piece; instead, I pin the collar with the bottom piece poking out all around. This grades the seam in addition to rolling it to the underside.

I put the interfacing on the upper collar, and trim the corners off the interfacing to make more room for the seam allowances. This helps hide the seam allowances, and helps the seam roll to the side that doesn't show. If I wanted two layers of interfacing, I'd put both of them on the upper collar.
