decipher fabric bolts ?

Dear Robb,

Sportswear is the intended use for the fabric; 10/08 could be either the weight of the yarns or the number of threads in the warp and weft directions; the 03 and 110 could be the color number, but I don't know. I hope someone (Kay??) can give us all more info. I usually don't read all that stuff, because I tend to buy the same types of fabrics over and over.

Other than on muslin, I'm not sure I've ever seen a weight on *bolted* fabrics, but do find it occasionally on the tags in rolls meant for manufacturing (and the weight would be on the purchase order, too.) I do see it quoted +/- often on websites, where it's useful because you can't feel the goods.

I'm going to guess that "sportswear" is the section that the bolt is supposed to get filed in, and 10/08 means it came in Oct 2008.

i was hoping those numbers had more info about the fabric. I wish they had some kind of info ... out of 5-7 different 100% cotton twills (probably about the same weight - i am guessing) there was quite a range of soft, flexible , rough, stiff etc...

the one i was interested in *seemed* very light and i was wanting heavier like 8-10 oz

I have seen the weight on some bolt labels before but i think it was probably part of the fabric decription or name like for the one that said "10 oz. Duck" as if that were part of the name and not a technical spec. of the fabric.

I think you're right... I do seem to recall canvas and duck often having a weight. And you may find silk labeled in mm, which stands for momme or mummy, and is a different unit of weight.

But no, sportswear just indicates fabric for casual clothes, alas.
