flea market score today

I found a treasure at the flea market today. One of my pals and I just needed to be o-u-t of the house for a while so we went and wandered.

Found a copy (in very good condition considering its age) a copy of "Sewing Made Easy." "All about dressmaking and sewing for the home....1,000 easy, step by step pictures."

Copyright MCMLX (1960.)

All sorts of fun things in there. A pretty good section on tailoring. A really nice section on how to add things to a pattern, like godets, or change out the sleeve style. All manner of fun things. Great line drawings. It really does look like a gem of a book.

There's some chuckle-worthy stuff too.

I really love this from the chapter on "Buying your pattern."

"Are you short? If you are less than 5 feet 3 inches, you are called short. You may be short and plump, or you may be a tiny, perfect doll. But these Do's and Don't's for dress and pattern buying apply to all small figures."

Followed by:

"Are you tall? If you are 5 feet 7 inches or over, you are counted tall. Tall women are lucky, for they can wear the striking, unusual clothes shown in this fashion magazines."

Not to mention they can reach the top shelf at the wal-mart. LOL

And I got this treasure for the princely sum of $1. ;)

I have some lovely 30's and 40's sewing manuals that are real treasures! Very proper in some respects. I imagine them being read in a 1930's BBC radio sort of voice...

Please tell me you took the pins out first..... It's really awkward typing from inside the knee hole of my desk.........

Sounds like you need to get out and cruise your local flea markets too. You can find some real gems some days....but other times you only find fleas. LOL

lol I know what you mean, Kate. I kept hearing the Voice Over Guy from all the 50's and 60's era educational type films. I swear it sounded like one guy who did the voice overs on ALL of those films. Seemed like he would be the best choice for this book too. ;)

What would be the "point" of throwing a weapon without, ummm, points? ;->

No time, no time! "I'm late / I'm late / For a very important date. / No time to say "Hello." / Goodbye. / I'm late, I'm late, I'm late...."

I've just this week had two contractors here to work up estimates on gutting the shower in the master bath. Tiles fell off the walls last week. I am planning on having the footprint enlarged a little and seamless glass on two sides, yummy tile on the other two with soap and shampoo niches. Also a new shower head, and mixer valve. And I'll finally have decent tile installed on the floor, the 40-year-old vinyl is looking really tired. There goes the fabric budget for a year at least.

ummmm.....fewer pins for you to replace later??? Oh, I know, you only put the bent ones in there right?? Very frugal of you. ;)

Just say no to bottles and cakes that tell you to consume them. Because if the edibles are talking to you, you've had enough.

Oh joy. Just remember (and I know you know this already) it's not so much spending money as it is increasing the value of your home. Truly not an expenditure, but rather an investment. (and a PITA while they are doing the work. LOL) It will be so lovely when it's finished. I hope the renovation goes smoothly. Or, you (and your little dog too!!!) could road trip out here while the work is going on. ;) You could help me finish planning the girl's (SENIOR!!!) prom dress.

Sure, I picked up all the bent ones from the floor with my pin-magnet, and stuck them in an old pincushion just to use as a weapon. Uh, huh.

Yup, it's transferring assets from one pocket to another. The money's still there, it's just not quit as liquid as before. ;-}

Thanks, this is by the same company which did my major kitchen remodel 6 (6?!!!) years ago. They did very good work then, and I'm working with the same designer/contractor this time, so I am optimistic. I have delayed this really necessary maintenance/upgrade, it is finally time.

That's so hard to realize! Next you'll be telling us all about her wedding gown. ;->
