Market Bag

I just finished up my market bag.

Very nice, and I glanced at your blog... saw the entry about McDonald's asking you NOT to crochet there. How very rude (and odd!) Are you going to put up a pattern for the market bag?

That is a nice market bag, thank you for showing it. I too was wondering if there would be a pattern anywhere (on your site?) for it?

That is very strange that McDonalds were so rude about you crocheting there. I've seen people knitting, crocheting, writing letters (or whatever), etc in a couple of McDonalds here in Ontario and no one says a thing except to say how pretty the project is that is being worked on.

Boy, talk about not friendly. I've seen people reading the newspaper at various McDonald's, and even noted that the papers were provided by the store on occasion. If you bought something to eat from them, and weren't sitting there for an entire afternoon, I can't see what their complaint was, unless people were waiting to sit and eat, or they have a posted time limit for seating.

I remember reading that they play fast-paced background music, have specific colour schemes and uncomfortable seating, with one goal in mind, specifically to get people to eat quickly and leave ASAP. Time is money, after all, and having patrons crocheting/knitting probably doesn't fit that goal.

Thanks Carey, it was really strange

I go to Tim Horton's (a coffee shop, franchised in Canada) on Monday after my workout. I take a book with me, because I sit alone, waiting for DH to come from his meeting. I am sure that I could bring knitting if I wanted to, and no one would say anything. And I'll bet I could do it at our MacDOnald's, too! But I probably wouldn't because, as Carey mentioned, the seats are too uncomfortable.

It is a no brainer, don't go to MacDonald in the first place, but to a nice little teashop or restaurant where you can sit comfortable, meet a friend and most likely get better food as well....LOL and of course, do a bit of knitting, braiding or crocheting

hehe :) I would agree, but we go when it's too cold here to go to the park ... the kids need to let off a little energy in the play area :)

I knit at a coffee shop on Saturday afternoons. It is very kid friendly and we can relax there.

There was a sandwich shop in Boston that I used to go to for a late lunch break. I read a book or newspaper and no one cared, even when I only ordered a coffee. That went on for many years and I got to know the staff fairly well. There was always a line out the door around midday, so I wasn't there at those times, but as one of their "regulars," if they saw me coming in and heading towards the coffee station, someone usually popped a cup onto the counter very quickly, and I usually had exact change. Now that was great service! Probably a lot of it depends on the type of atmosphere management provides to the staff, as well.

Sounds like a great place, Carey! Do you mind sharing the name?

Thanks!

If you know the financial district in downtown Boston, maybe you know Ricotti's sub shop on High Street? Used to be known as the Yellow Sub many years ago. Their tuna and seafood salad subs are good. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in over a year, since I accepted a "Voluntary Separation Package" from the bank I worked for. (They can consider hiring me back until some time after October this year.)

Thanks, Carey. It sounds familiar but I will have to check it out next time I am down that way. There have been quite a few changes in the banking industry in Boston the past couple years, haven't there? I'm sorry you got caught in the crossfire but hopefully the package you accepted was generous and you have lots of knitting time now!

It's right across from the back door of the telephone company building. The sub shop used to have the whole first floor of the building they are in, but now they only have a small area(about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the old shop.) Yes, the package was good, and the time off has been great. Now I'm starting to try to figure out if I want to go back to the same area of the bank(if they have a position), or if I want to try another area. After 24 years in one company, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to go somewhere else, really. We shall see. As for knitting, I'm doing a bit more yard work than that at present. My poor knitting machine sits there, looking at me. Guess I have to dig up some ambition, along with the weeds and rocks in the yard. ;-)

Good luck with your decision! You are so good to be getting your yard work done. Mine has been sorely neglected - I keep blaming it on the rain we've been getting every weekend :)

Actually, my "yard work" right now consists of chipping out a tree stump, so that I can move the fence on that side of the yarn in about 2 feet, as I just had the lot surveyed and found out I had the fence put up in the wrong place. Over the years, before I bought the house, there had been 3 different fences up, and we and the previous owners of the other house thought we knew where the property lines were. Turned out we didn't and it's only fair that it be moved back. So of course, this huge stump is right where one of the poles needs to go, and no one seems to think that they should be spaced any differently than they are now, so.... Almost got enough of it out of the way, just maybe another afternoon's work on it(I hope). It's grey and icky out, so I don't think I'm going to be doing anything on it today, but then again, famous last words, and all that.

Ooooh, that doesn't sound like much fun! Good luck. Take it easy - it sounds pretty strenuous. We just had some sun move in up here in Boston so hopefully it will be moving your way soon.
