HUGE felted bag

I would like to make a HUGE felted bag out of Lopi. I just bought 6 sks and not sure if that will be enough. Does anyone have a pattern or a url (that has pics only, please nothing w/o pics) When finished I would like the bag to be at least 18-24 in. wide. thanks!

Basic felted bag method:

Make a swatch using hte intended stitch (usually garter for the base and stockinette for the sides). Use needles about twice as big as you would otherwise use for the yarn in question. Record the number of stitches, the needle size, the width and the length.

Put the swatch through a wash cycle. Evaluate it. If the swatch is too sleazy put it thru the wash again. If it is still too sleazy knit another swatch on needles a few sizes smaller and repeat the washing process. Continue doing this until you produce a fulled fabric you like.

Now heark back to elementary school arithmetic. Set up an equation and solve it for the total number of stitches to cast on for the bottom in order to produce the finished footprint you want. Knit accordingly. Pick up around the bottom and knit up the sides, again having determined how many rows you need to knit in order to produce finished fulled fabric sides of the height desired.

There are endless variations in construction methods and in ways of providing "shape" to the bag. Experiment. Your friends will be happy to use your self-perceived failures.

Thank you for trying to help .. yes, I understand felting very well .. i guess you didn't read my post.

Instead of slogging on Wooly - perhaps you should look for patterns yourself instead of expecting others to do it for you. Google works very well.

I did ... I didn't know that we could not ask questions here? I see others asking for patterns .. i was just clear about what I was looking for. Who said I *didn't* google first. ... of course I did. and I did say "Thank you" at the top of my post ...

How many nicer ways there are tell a person to screw off...

I'd rather not waste yarn on swatches because I may not have enough, but thanks anyhow. I'll file your post for future use.

Thanks for the advice, but I really need a pattern this time. Do you have one I might be able to work from?

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any information on how Lopi felts? [It happens that I do, but wild horses won't get it out of me now.]

And a rework for the OP: I've got some Lopi yarn and I don't want to use any on swatches because I don't want to run short for my project. Has anyone seen a pattern for a bag about yea-so using Lopi or a similar yarn that I can use as a starting point? I've been looking for a couple of days now and I'm not finding anything useful.

What's the old saw about men and fishes and fishing?

Nothing wrong with me - the problem obviously rests with you. As for who is the idiot - take a look in the mirror, and take your own advice to have sex with yourself. Have a nice day.

You're welcome. Yep, making it bigger would be easy, and at least with Julie's original pattern and yarnage/yardage requirements, you'll at least have an idea as to how much you'll need, even making it bigger. Noreen

Thank you for the detailed explanation, Wooly! I have never tried felting before, and honestly don't know if I ever will... but I have kept your explanation just in case. :o)
