? enlarging paper-piecing pattern

I want to copy a pattern from a magazine, but the original size is an ornament and I want to make it bigger. The original size is 5.5 x

7.5. It has about 20 pattern pieces. What percentage do I enlarge on the copier?

To get an answer you have to tell us how big you want it to be! :)

There is a scale and a formula for enlarging and reducing. Go to

I'd like a wall hanging. 40 x 45ish

Going from, say, 5.5 inches to 40 inches (taking the lowest denominator) would be roughly about 800%. I really don't know if Kinko's or OfficeMax can go that high ... well, I'm sure they could (but it would be quite a bit of enlarging piecemeal by piecemeal). But I doubt they'd have paper large enough! If you have extra change, you can go to a local blueprint shop and have them print it out at full-size (for our area, approximately 40 square woud be roughly about $25). But we tend to be in the boonies where technology is a bit on the scarce side, so prices might be higher.

Can you tell me what magazine it's in? Chances are, I have it and I can scan & trace it quickly in EQ6 ...

Is it applique, foundation-pieced or traditional pieced? In any case, we can get it sorted out!! :)

This is approximately 7 times the original size quoted, so you would need to enlarge by 700%. However, no photocopier that I've ever met will do that in one go; you will have to do it by stages, depending on how the machine is set up. You will also probably have to stick pieces of paper together after the first couple of stages. . In message , yvette writes

So what you're wanting to do is take a single paper pieced block and turn it into a wall hanging? You could take freezer paper and tape it together to get the size of your wall hanging and then draw out your pattern. I think at that size I might change it to a raw edge applique pattern though.

If all else fails - Trace the pattern from the magazine onto 1/4" gridded paper. Then get a huge sheet of plain paper the size you want the finished project to be. Count the number of squares (or lines you'll need) on the original's length and width, and make your own "grid" of lines on the plain paper. Then "try to draw what's inside each grid box of the original onto the boxes on the plain paper. Uhhh... If your pattern is originally 5.5" wide -- and the plain paper is

40" wide - the lines need to be about 6" apart (actually an itsy bit over 6, but it'd be close enough.) Then make squares by drawing more 6" apart lines in the other direction. Easier to do if you've got one of those loooong quilting rulers Clear as mud?

I did this once to make a "Winnie-the-Pooh with his head in a hunny jar" quilt for my ggd... The pattern came from a wallpaper pattern I found online and downloaded the picture. I drew squares on it (the downloaded pic) and then drew what was in each square onto squares I'd drawn on the back side of some wrapping paper. It came close enough to look good, anyway. With an "ornament" pattern, it would be simple to get the curve parts lined up better after you get the squares drawn, but the overall design would be pretty close, I'd bet.

Just my "cheapo" 2 cents worth.

If it's paper piecing, there shouldn't be any curved lines. And Yvette never told us what size blocks she wants to make. All of the answers assume that she wants to make a single 40" or so block. Some blocks that look great at 5" might not look so good at 40".

The pattern is in the 2004 "quilts with style" magazine. I e-mailed it you.

Okay ... I have a few questions:

1) How big do you want it? I think you gave a rough approximation somewhere else in the thread, but wanted to make sure ...

2) Do you have EQ? If so, what version (I have EQ6)? If I trace it in EQ (and you have the same version as I do) then you can just resize it to whatever size you need, and you can totally ignore question no. 1! :)

3) I'm going to assume that you want it squared off rather than as a oval, right?

I think that's it ... let me know when you can! I'll be out for a while later this AM - have a doc's appt for my DS. But I should be back on after

1pm.

My goof for not reading carefully and missing the Paper-Piecing part... (not enough coffee!!! ) But, if Yvette still can't find a copy place with reasonable rates, she might be able to use the same technique -- but with straight lines and accurate angles, might be easier.
