Fiber Trends Felted Clogs

I've made a few pair, and couldn't believe how huge they were unfelted the first time I made them. The smallest pair I made was for myself, and I have a relatively small foot (size 6), and was able to felt them down to the correct size, but it took several cycles. The yarn I used was Lambs Pride, which in my experience, felts down more quickly than some, and I was actually afraid it was going to felt down TOO small (which I did with a hat once that I made out of it). I tried them on (with a plastic bag over my foot) several times while they were felting, and when they got to the point where they felt snug, I took them out, rinsed them, and shaped each of them by putting my foot in a plastic bag and then in each slipper for a moment, and then removing my foot. As I recall, they took a LONG time to dry though!

I have used the pattern. One pair felted up great , with lambs pride and the other pair I used cascade and it felted too small. On your hubbies slippers have you shocked them into felting more with the hot /cold treatment? sometimes this gets the fiber to pull just a little bit more. Only other thing I can think of is if this is maybe superwash or a wool mix that is not at least 75% wool . This makes felting tough and though will full some , it won't shrink much. Coggie

I've never felted anything at all. I did have a chuckle over the image of your husband wearing pink slippers (if you had done them that colour) though. hehehe

This is 100% wool and is not superwash. I have done a swatch on each colour of the skeins I bought and they felt very nicely, except for the humungous size for this slipper pattern. I have done the hot/cold treatment at least three times and tried the drier too.

The size 6 ladies small will in all likelihood fit my DH's size 11 feet. I might try them with single strand yarn instead of double to see if that helps.

I've used this pattern and had trouble with 1 clog. It felted too large and had a crease in the toe section. The other clog was perfect. I also used Lamb's Pride. I both felted and dried these clogs. When my DD#2 is home over the winter, she loves to wear them, in spite of the difference in "shoes."

Shelagh, find a friend who has large feet and give them as a Christmas precent. I have had similar problems knitting the same pattern. Knit them one size smaller and also, I have found that you should stick as much as possible to the yarn the recomment for these slippers. I single strand will not make them firm and thick enough, just come down one size and you will be alright

Tonight I've thrown them in the washer again to see what happens - the smaller ones that were supposed to be for me. I'll report back tomorrow.

Shelagh, how big are they? I have a friend who wears a size 15 shoe, but usually goes barefoot since it's difficult for him to get shoes on (he's paraplegic). Would you be interested in selling them?

Sounds like I should be making this pattern for my cousin - he has size 18 feet (at age 16)!

Yes, I think 6'6" last I heard - it is hard to keep up with how quickly he grows! His parents are hoping that it's slowing down since they can't find shoes for him anywhere!

Wow, that is tall for a 16 year old. Hopefully he likes and is good at sports of some kind. tall guys usually do well with a career in sports. :o)

Hi Carol These slippers are 13 inches long on the bottom of the sole, and are quite large in the instep area. I have to run to the doctor's office right now, but when I get back I'll post a picture of them on my Yahoo album and post a link. If you think they'd fit your friend, all I'd want is postage to mail them and only because postage for packages out of Canada is not cheap. They might cost as much as $10 to mail. Of course I'd have to confirm that before mailing. I'll get back to you later today. ;>)

Shelagh, I would be more than willing to pay postage! I've looked at that clog pattern for the last year, wondering (1) if I had enough knitting skill to make them and (2) if I could make them big enough to fit him.

The clogs may be a bit long, but I don't think that will be a problem. Having them extra-large in the instep is even better, as his feet swell quite a bit. I would guess (from making a loop with a tape measure) that they're about 16" to 18" around.

A very tall teenage tennis player.... Yes, I'm sure the girls are going to love him! ;o)

I knew a boy who was only about 4' tall in grade 8 (when I was working at the school watching the kids on lunchtime yard duty), and he was a real sweetie. A couple of years went by (putting him in grade 10 then... so that's about 15 years old) and one day I was in the video rental store looking at movies when I heard my name. I turned around to look directly at the stomach of a young man (I'm 5' 7"). I looked waaaaaay up and almost fell over in surprise... here was this same young man who had been so tiny only two years before. He grinned and said "Yep, I had a MAJOR growth spurt over the last little while!" He's a policeman in the nearby city now, and still a sweetie. ;o)
