Help

I want to purchase a low-cost sewing machine for my wife. I wonder what you would recommend for under $150. I looked thru Ebay and have looked at several stores, but i do not even know where to start. The usage is going to be hemming, repairs, pillows, youknow, pretty basic, except she wants to be able to sew both denim and silk. Does such a machine exist? the machine she is using we bought in 1974 at a Sears store on Army St. It has been closed for years. Thanks in advance for your help. joe Remove NOT to email directly

Why not just have your current machine serviced and refurbed? If it was a Sears machine, they will still work on it for probably less than you want to spend on a replacement. Then you will have a good machine for what you are proposing to do.

Yes, on the used market. Find something like an old Singer 300, 400, or

500 series machine, or even a 200 series or a 99 if you don't think she will need zigzag capabilities, that is in good condition. There are lots of other older brands that are good. You can find them at thrift stores, newspaper ads, and yard sales as well as Ebay (email me if you want to buy one by auction and I'll send you the URLS for sewing machine packing instructions, so you can write the seller ahead of time to secure a promise that they will pack the machine well according to the instructions). Be sure to try the machine out first. I find lots of machines in good condition at thrift stores all the time and see lots of people selling older machines for $50 in the classifieds. All of these machines will last forever with proper care and won't gag on denim.

No new machine that costs $150 is going to do a good job on denim for very long, because the new low-end machines are not made to be heavy-duty machines.
