Highland "Nationals" vest

I put the green velveteen vest I was making for DGD aside right before our trip so I could complete a few things for me. I finished and delivered it to her, and tomorrow is the Portland Highland Games. DGD is going to wear the red Highland vest and kilt I made for her *to* the games and change later into her competition outfits (including the green vest and skirt). I'll try to get some pictures of her in both to put on my site.

That looks terrific - all the pictures do. She did really well, too!

Thanks. She has now taken to talking about protecting her feet in order not to end her "career". She is really quite serious about Highland dancing, and her teacher seems fairly certain she could advance to the next level soon. We are all going to Seattle for another competition (not "completion" :-( ) Friday and Saturday.

Yes, that would be the downside to having a competitor in the family. I've a good friend with a competitive dog. Goes to shows. Comes home with ribbons, but only after a long hot day in the sun. Not comparing your DGD with a dog, you understand, it's the issue of "family support." And you won't be putting your DGD at stud.

Fortunately, for the dance competitions the children are usually either indoors or under a canopy, so they don't end up panting to cool off. ;-) However, we in the supportive audience sometimes get either drenched or sunburned. This weekend in PDX was perfect for both competitors and audience.

ROTFL!

Wow, fabulous in every way! (Although I am puzzled as to why on my monitor the first costume is red rather than green.) The vest with white trim is beautiful. Gran is truly skilled. I can imagine how uneven the trim might appear if I had made it. And the red kilt (you say green) is so well pleated and pressed that not a pleat is evident in that photo.

I loved each photo and appreciate her dancing triumph. It would be beautiful to see. Not to mention how much I'd love being there and hearing the pipes.

Absolutely beautiful, both the costume and Blair. Emily

Sorry for the confusion. The first image in that series is Blair in the red velveteen vest and Royal Stewart kilt I made. For the actually dancing later, she changed into a blue vest and kilt (borrowed gear), and later yet into the green "Nationals" vest (newly made) and plaid skirt (not a kilt). There is a dickey on the blouse which gets reversed from lace-trimmed to flat, depending on which outfit is required for a given dance.

The photo of the front of the kilt is actually the flat apron, the pleats are across the back. I took pictures of the finished kilt on her a few months ago:

was taken prior to my completing the vest.

Going to the games is much fun for the entire family, the opening ceremony is very impressive.

Wow Beverly, what a great job you did on the outfits! And Blair is a beauty. Even in the still photos she looks so graceful. You must be tremendously proud of her.

Thanks, Doreen, praise from you is much appreciated.

Ya' think?!?!? ;-) She works tremendously hard, practicing several hours a week without *any* pushing by her parents. I can hardly wait for this weekend's games in Seattle.

How is your DGD doing? I think you said she had the last of her chemo treatments, I hope all is well.

Very good news so far...thanks for asking! Scans and tests last month, which she'll continue to have periodically, showed no sign of the cancer. And in physical therapy for use of her arm, she's ahead of where they expected her to be by now.

She still looks terribly frail, but time should take care of that.

Kids can be so amazingly resiliant. They take what comes and move on in a way that seems to be difficult for adults. Good for her, and best of luck. My grandson who had chemo and a bone marrow transplant now looks like he's going to be a football player - by his build, not by his interest. A long way from where he was as an infant.

That is indeed very good news, I hope everything continues to go well for her. I can't even imagine how devastated I would be if one of my DGC were in that situation.

Best,

Well done Beverly! Very well done Blair!! Blair, keep on with your dancing. Don't give yourself any opportunity for regrets in the future for not keeping on with it.

Wonderful work, Beverly. And she has grown into such a gorgeous young woman. Tell her folks are proud of her all the way to Arkansas. ;) (and probably further than that!)

Beautiful garments on a beautiful girl.

Thanks!

Right now, she is so enamored with it, I think there's little risk of her discontinuing dancing. She is also very musically talented, so I suppose at some point one is going to have to take priority. I hope that day is a long way off, I love to listen to her play (piano and flute) as well.

Thanks again,

Beverly

Thanks, Sharon!

Aaack, nooooooo! She is only eleven, she can't be a *woman* yet! Although she is entering Middle School (6th grade) next fall. Where have the years flown, seems like just yesterday I gave her the AG doll.

I'll pass that along, she'll be delighted. ;-)

The flute is one of those things I gave up in my youth and have regretted it since. Not anymore, I've bought and refurbished a used flute and am learning again. Ditto with German. Two few years left to not do what I always wanted to do. AK in PA
