I collected my prizes

I went to the Mill End Store on Thursday and collected all the items I had sent to the OR State Fair.

On 26 sewn and knit items, I received:

20 blue ribbons 3 red ribbons 2 white ribbons 5 "Best in Class" 3 "Judges' Choice Awards"

The "Judges' Choice Awards in Clothing Construction", prize was a Huskylock 901 Serger. For the "Best in Class" awards, I recieved $70.00 in gift certificates to be used at Hancock's Fabric and the Mill End Store.

I called the owner of the shop which donated the serger, and asked her if I could upgrade the 901 to a 936. She was happy to do it for me, so today I drove to McMinnville and made the swap. I took the wedding gown, flower girl dress, and lined suit with me to show her the items which won awards.

I also entered 9 food items (first time I've done that), and received:

1 blue ribbon 2 red ribbons 1 white ribbon

All in all, a very satisfying experience. :-)

Beverly

Absolutely amazing, Beverly. I 'oohed' and 'aahhed' while looking at all the pictures! The garments are breathtaking, the the foot items look REALLY yummy (and pretty, too). Congratulations!

What an amazing tally of prizes! Congratulations. You'll need a big wall to display all the ribbons. Good to see that you have won some other things too. The food items look yummy. Any chance of getting the recipes? I'm so glad I saw the photos after eating - the fruit cake would have had me running for a snack.

Congratulations! It must be so rewarding to see other professionals respect your work. Everything was beautiful. How long did it take you to do these projects? Were the garments in the hands of others and if so, how did you get them back and cleaned in time for the show?

Beverly, I and my daughter, do so appreciate you sharing your experience here!!! More than you will ever know! Enthusiasm here at the Michigan State Fair has died out so dreadfully and entries are so minimal.....yours alone would have comprised ALL of the entries (based on my husbands comment - not mine). I just wish people here in Michigan (and I KNOW people here must still sew - at least I figure they must because there are lines at the fabric stores when I go and they are not ALL buying crafts)....just wish they had at least entered ONE thing. Next year is an election year....so we may get to keep our fair one more year....but then it will probably DIE! (I am so sad). But it's because nobody enters....so there is nothing to see. And when there is nothing to see....nobody goes. And when nobody goes.....welll....there isn't a Fair. Sad really. But the little bit of promising report my daughter and I do have from the Michigan State Fair is that the entries in the youth divisions were UP....and we set up about 1640!! Horay for the youth!!! (Exhausting but it looked beautiful when we were done!) Anyway, my little plug....that anyone that is sitting on their rumpus in Michigan with even half an inkling of ever entering something in the State Fair.....please plan ahead now and be brave and "Just DO IT." It's just good for the public to be able to SEE that stuff can actually be MADE BY REAL PEOPLE and not everything is iimported from mass production in far off countries. I just think it's important that we don't lose that. Now, back to Beverly....do you feel that patting on the back? That's me...pat, pat, pat. I still can't believe you won a serger! Maybe that's what our fair needs to do...get a shop to donate a serger. I guess I should ask what was your motivation? Have you done alot of entries before? Have you EVER collected that many ribbons before or is this your personal record? They should do a newspaper report on you....or did they? Did you win the Exhibitor of the Year or equivalent award? Is that what the "Judges' Choice Award is? And finally....most of your beautiful outfits were behind th glass cases as my husband remembers from growing up in Salem.....but what about the wedding gown.......what kept people from touching it? It was so close to those cakes with all their frostings! We keep the cakes in glass cases.....and then usually put the dresses behind roped off areas....trying to keep volunteers nearby that repeat when necessary "please don't touch." Well....I guess I have inundated you with way too many questions...but I am just so excited for you I can hardly stand it. I would have loved to come see your exhibit. Why didn't you say anything ahead of time that you were entering? (I probably wouldn't have either - jinx it or let the competition know what I was up to hehe) Well done!! Well done. Can't say it enough!!! Joy

Yay!!!!!!!!!

I was so proud of you when I saw the ribbons in the pictures. And then to find out there were PRIZES to go with them!!!!! Whoo hoo!!!! Guess we won't hear from you for a while since you will be playing with your new toy. ;) Enjoy it. You certainly deserved it. When my in-laws were here, I showed off your work to my MIL. She was really impressed, actually gasped when she saw your DD's wedding dress. :)

All the adulation (and the swag too!) was well deserved. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person either.

I'm sending just one rely to thank: Irene, Emily, Joanne, Kate, Viviane, Liz, Joy, Barbara, Sharon, Doreen, A, and Suzan for all your wonderful compliments. Thanks so much!

Joy, I'm going to respond in a new thread to your comments about the MI fair. The woman whose shop donated the serger was very happy to see that some people are still sewing garments, and she had a student group there the day I went in, who all took turns inspecting the "inner-workings" of my sewing, especially Karen's wedding gown.

About 50% of the entries to the OR fair were quilts and crafts. More later,

Beverly
