Lubrication of plastic gears

Hi

Unfortunateley I gave my wife some lithium-based grease to lubricate the plastic gears on some old (60s/70s) sewing machines. (The grease was Castrol LM - used for engines.)

We have just read that lithium based grease will damage plastic (possibly the older plastics) and should not be used. Can anyone advise on this and suggest the best way to clean the grease off?

Thanks

Dismantle the machines. Take the gears out and wash with warm soapy water. Dry carefully and reassemble... Give a light coating of appropriate lubricant if the manual says this is necessary.

I have been using white lithium grease for years with no ill effects. Most new machines with gears come with White lithium grease on them

Thanks Kate. Dismantling the machine in order to remove the gears would be a major task possibly beyond our capabilities. It's an option though - and we'll keep in minds.

From what I've read there are different sorts of lithium grease. Some are synthetic and some are petroleum based, It's the petroleum based ones that can cause problems with some plastics - and unfortunately that's the type we used. I think the white lithium based grease you refer to is the synthetic type.

Use WD40 and a stiff brush to clean them off. then blow it dry with compressed air, and re-lube

I was on the bench today and looked at the tube of grease and it is petroleum based.
