LYCRA TRIM

Hello, folks. I'm sewing a bodysuit for my daughter and am having difficulty with the trim. I added trim around the neckline and armholes and now have to topstitch it in place. I tried using the coverstitch on my Elna 744 but can't keep the stitching lines even, so I resorted to topstitching with my Bernina sewing machine. Now my problem is that the sewing stitches snap when stretched. I am using a stretch needle, small zig zag width and medium long stitch length. Does anyone have experience stitching lycra trim to bodysuits/costumes, etc. Any tips would be so appreciated.

Thank you!

I do this often on my Berninas using a zig zag stitch with absolutely no problem with breaking stitches. Have you tried stretching the fabric as you sew? (you must hold the fabric on both ends so you don't break a needle). You can also use the stretchier lycra stitch or even the super stretch stitch if your machine has it. Are you using a resilient poly thread?

try a double needle topstitch with wooly nylon in the bobbin.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions to solve my stitch-breaking problem. I tried doing it again, this time stretching the fabric and "voila!"; success!! I also like the idea of topstitching with a double needle & wooly nylon thread. I'll give that a try the next time I add trim to a bodysuit.
