My latest...

Well, I sorta finished that shirt we were discussing in a thread called "buttons". I decided I didn't have a preference between black and white when I put swatches in the collar area to see how it'd look, so I used black because everyone else liked that, but changed it to a band collar.

It's hard to see in the photo (since I tried to make it hard to see in the garment) but there's a placket at the top center, like a golf shirt would have. A large one. I chose to do very minimal stitching on it: there are three buttonholes and a bar tack, and that's all that holds the left placket facing in place. I didn't want to do any more topstitching than I had to, because I wanted it to have a very smooth looking front, interrupted by nothing but three buttons which will blend in very well.

You can see it at:

The back is navy blue with glittery stars. It doesn't photograph well.

The buttons are being problematic. Every time I try to attach one of the buttons I wanted to use, it pops out from under the presser foot: they're a bit too rounded for my presser foot. I'm going to ask a friend if I can use his machine, which has a nice button attaching foot with a little clip to hold the button, next time I'm visiting him. Meanwhile I put on one other button so I can wear it if I want to. I like the button I used but unfortunately have only one like it. I will also add a buttonhole or two on the collar to hold that properly, I'll probably use small black buttons. Oh, and since it has an astro theme I'm considering adding Ursa Major in rheinstones on the right sleeve, if I can remember where I put my rheinstones. I'll ask an astrophysicist I know to give me the relative colors and sizes of the stars so it'll be a little more correct and more visually interesting. But, I may decide that's too over the top and not do it. (Although, with this shirt, what could be *too* over the top?)

Nice one! I wonder if I can get James to make shirts as well as quilts... :)

Very nice! Looks really comfy which is a must. :) I love the color scheme too. What fun!!! Isn't the best part of sewing for yourself the knowledge that no one else, anywhere, will have a garment just exactly like the one you made yourself??

Good work!

That is very nice! I wish my DH would wear something so interesting, it looks like it was fun to make.

Tom, Have you tried a piece of scotch tape to hold the button in place while sewing it on? That works very well for me when I have sewed on unique buttons. It's easy tp peel off after the button is attached. Love the colors in your shirt! Pauline, also from Massachusetts!

More detail on the taping, please? (Do you tape to the shirt or the presser foot?)

The manual for my machine shows a presser foot for sewing buttons, round with (I assume) a recess on the bottom to center and support the button. Being Bernina commercial, I don't want to hear the price, and I've never seen one in Atlanta Thread's catalog, whose inexpensive feet fit my machine.

Imagine what can be that isn't there yet!

(*slaps forehead*) How did I forget that one? Oh well. I'll change the buttons sometime soon...

Oh, and if you use paper tape, you can just tear it off when you're done.

Tape to the shirt.

My friend has one for his high-end Brother machine that has a clip that holds the button in place, and an optional shaft that slides over the top of the button to lengthen the threads securing the button to ensure the button isn't held too tightly to the fabric. It's very nice. I wish I had one. I've always otherwise been able to make do with just placing the button carefully under the presser foot. (Except for shank buttons of course, but they're another story and I avoid them.)
