Optimum size for serviettes / table napkins ?

I'm trying to get a head start on stuff this year so I've just been to a local home dec fabric store where all their Christmas fabrics were on sale.



I bought 2m of PVC covered fabric with small holly leaves all over for a tablecloth which should easy to keep clean with two small boys and will last more than one meal at a time.



I also got 2m of a coordinating cotton fabric with poinsettia rosettes and holly leaves that I shall make serviettes/napkins out of, but..... now I can't decide what size to cut them! These are going to be fairly utilitarian due to the small boy effect - rolled hem on the serger for speed even though I've got 11 months to finish them.



Any comments on whether to go large or small gratefully accepted.

Lizzy, I make cotton napkins all the time, and like them to be at least 18" (about .5 m) square. However, if you're using 45" fabric (about 1.3 m?), you can make them a little larger, to take advantage of the width. It's hard to have a napkin that's too large, IMO.

Rolled hem on the serger works fine, but I also like to simply make a twice-turned 1/4" hem, too.

Have fun; it's nice to have a "wardrobe" of table linens, especially holiday ones. Karen Maslowski in Cincinnati
