News special reports announce that Chief Justice William Rehnquist, died at his home Saturday.

Not sure, but I think he did this to show he was the head honcho, top of the heap, big cheese, or simply put THE chief justice.

According to Linda Greenhouse, who wrote his obituary for the New York Times, he was a private joker. He loved Gilbert and Sullivan, and took several cues from a local production of "Iolanthe". After the Clinton impeachment trial, at which he presided, he told reporters, "I did nothing in particular and I did it very well." In that production, the Lord Chancellor appeared in black robes with four gold stripes; a few weeks later, so did the Chief Justice. It's easy to imagine him tongue in cheek ..
